My teaching style varies depending on student needs and the approaches of the teacher/instructor I am supplementing. I use the first session as an opportunity to register the students current level of understanding and adjust my teaching style accordingly. Typically, students to come prepared with types of problems they have questions about (including classwork, homework, and quizzes) and I demonstrate how I approach the problems while discussing my thought process. Following this I will ask the student to work on small portions of the problem and observe and assist as needed. As the students becomes more proficient I encourage them to continue with the problem with less assistance from me. Often students will be working completely independently on the relevant type of problems by the end of session! I continue this pattern with every new topic that is broached.
