About Kate

I offer a FREE initial telephone consultation. I am KY and TN state certified in middle school math.

I am a tutor and test prep coach. I prepare students for the ACT, PSAT, NLN-PAX, TEAS, HESI, Kaplan, HSPT, Praxis core (reading, writing, and math), elementary education multiple subjects (Praxis 5001, 5014, and 5018), and 11 other standardized exams. I have been educating students for 20 years, teaching and tutoring at two and four year colleges and universities as well as offering test prep courses and one on one coaching. Courses I taught include English composition, developmental math, and college math. l also tutor a variety of subjects, including biology and literature.

Watching my students raise their test scores, master a difficult subject, and achieve their goals is a joy, and the reason that I teach and tutor. I am patient and skilled at explaining ideas and concepts in multiple ways to accommodate the needs of the students. And I'm great at responding to emergency "My ACT composite was what???" situations.

IN-PERSON vs ONLINE LESSONS

In addition to in person tutoring, I also offer online lessons which I conduct using computer accessories and advanced software. This allows me to draw/write on a tablet and have it show up directly on your computer screen while you can still hear and see me, like a virtual whiteboard. In my experience, these lessons are just as effective and produce outstanding results. In addition, this is much more convenient and comfortable for the student. No going out in the snow or summer heat, no traffic, tutoring literally in the comfort of your own home. I definitely recommend trying at least one online lesson - no student of mine that has ever tried this method has ever been dissatisfied with it (even those who were skeptical initially).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have helped juniors score a 34-36 in ACT English, allowing them to begin their senior year with the ACT scores they need to attend their first choice school already on their transcript. Athletes working with me often score a 28 in this section and a composite of 30 or higher when taking the ACT for the very first time.

ACT Math

When my students- including athletes - take the ACT for the first time, they often score a composite of 30 or above. I am great at explaining basic math concepts in multiple ways, so students can fully grasp those concepts. I have been designing and teaching ACT math prep courses, with great success, since 1997. I taught developmental math and college math at area colleges and universities.

ACT Reading

I have helped juniors - including athletes - score a 34 and above in this section when they take the ACT for the very first time. This allows them to begin their senior year with the ACT scores they need to attend their first choice school already on their transcript. I have been designing and teaching ACT reading comprehension prep courses since 1997.

ACT Science

The ACT science isn't about reading - it's about knowing when NOT to read and thus move through the section in an accurate, time efficient manner. Many of my high school juniors - including athletes - score a 32 or above in this section when taking the ACT for the first time. I have a minor in biology and advanced coursework in chemistry and physics. I emphasize test taking strategies that allow even a non-science loving student to achieve an exceptional score on this section of the ACT.

Algebra 1

I am KY and TN state certified in middle school math.

I taught developmental math and college math at two year colleges. I served as the math lab coordinator at Austin Peay State University for two years.

I tutor Algebra most every day. I tutor middle and high school students who are challenged by the Algebra coursework. I coach future college students who need assistance on the math sections of the ACT and SAT. And I prep future nursing students who need to review math coursework for the TEAS, NLN-PAX, Kaplan, and HESI to gain admission into nursing school. I'm great at explaining basic Algebra concepts in multiple ways, so students can fully grasp the concepts.

Algebra 2

I taught developmental math and college math at colleges. I also spent a year in the public school system working as a fifth grade math coach. I served as math lab coordinator for Austin Peay State University for two years.

American History

I love American history. I read non-fiction constantly. I won the Woodmen of the World American History award as a senior in high school. I have a 4.0 average in every history course, both American and world history, that I have ever studied at a college level. I would be thrilled to help your student excel in and enjoy American history.

Anatomy

I have a minor in biology from Austin Peay State University with a 4.0 average in every biology course that I have ever studied at the college level, including a year long study of Anatomy and Physiology. I often prepare future nursing students for the TEAS, NLN-PAX, and HESI so I coach anatomy and physiology on a regular basis. I'm great at explaining the basic concepts, and there are some great study resources available for this topic.

Aspergers

I greatly enjoy working with Aspergers students. I have minors in psychology and biology and graduate level training in clinical psychology. This academic background prepared me well for positive interaction with Aspergers students. I have successfully worked with Aspergers students, using tutoring to assist them in reaching their academic goals while also learning ways to more effectively interact in the school/college environment. Students diagnosed with Aspergers have unique viewpoints of the world, and having the chance to see things from their point of view often makes me smile.

Biology

I have a biology minor from Austin Peay State University with a 4.0 average. As a test prep coach, I tutor biology on a regular basis as many of my clients are hoping to attend nursing school (TEAS V, NLN-PAX, HESI, Kaplan Entrance Exam) or are competing for admission to college (ACT, SAT). I love studying and teaching the interrelationships between biology, chemistry, and physics.

Career Development

I help students create and improve their resumes. I also taught business communication at the local college for several semesters. As a test prep coach with graduate training in clinical psychology, I am often asked by students and their families to analyze the student's strengths and weaknesses and then recommend career options and specific steps to take to successfully enter that career.

College Counseling

For the past four years, I have assisted students, including talented students pursuing academic scholarships, with college applications and admissions. Several of my students have received half and full tuition academic scholarships. My background as a test prep coach and awareness of various deadlines assists me in guiding the student and his/her parents through the often challenging college admissions process. I can help the student determine if retaking college entrance exams is in his/her best interest. I also can recommend colleges and universities that best fit a student's talents and goals. I can help the student determine his/her goals and make advised decisions regarding the college admission process.

COOP/HSPT

I am KY and TN state certified in middle school math. I have a bachelor's degree in English with honors.

I have been preparing students for standardized exams since 1997. Both the COOP and the HSPT are tightly timed tests with scoring systems similar to the ACT. The main difference between the two is the length of the exams, with the HSPT containing approximately 118 more questions than the COOP.

I daily tutor all the topics included on both exams. I'm great at explaining the basic math concepts tested on both exams in multiple ways, so students can fully grasp the concepts. Some students are concerned about their reading speed. I emphasize test taking strategies that compensate for that. I also teach students time management strategies that allow them to complete the exams in the the time allotted.

Film

As part of my English major (with honors) at Transylvania University, I took a film course and made an A. After graduation, I worked for several years as a film critic for newspapers in Florida. I love movies, so I still spend a great deal of time at the theater or at home, studying film. I rewatched the classic "Anatomy of a Murder" last night. And when the Oscars roll around, I will be hosting my annual party.

Genetics

I have a biology minor from Austin Peay State University with a 4.0 average in my biology coursework which included genetics. I tutor students in biology and prep students for the science section of the ACT. At least once a week, I am teaching a student how to determine dominant and recessive, homozygous and heterozygous.

MAGICAL

I struggle with test taking in general. I took the TEAS once and could have passed by with getting into LPN school, but I really wanted to be a RN. It had always been my dream. The school that I was applying for needed my TEAS score to be an additional 10 points from my first test score. I knew I could raise my score by a few points, but would have never dreamed I could have done it by 12 points.
