Bio

My first degree was a B.S. in Physics with a minor in Mathematics, after which I began working as an avionics systems engineer. I soon began tutoring co-workers and friends and learned that I really enjoy helping others learn! That inspired me to change careers and become an educator. I went on to earn my M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics and have been teaching and tutoring ever since. I have been recognized with both university and state-level teaching awards.

I enjoy working with students at all levels and have taught courses from elementary algebra to graduate-level mathematics. I believe that with perseverance and the appropriate guidance anyone can acquire skill in these areas. I have seen students who struggled with beginning algebra go on to become strong mathematics majors, and many of my former students have become inspired to pursue more mathematics just as I did.

I have experience in many areas of mathematics and especially enjoy teaching pre-calculus, trigonometry, calculus (I-III), linear algebra, probability, methods of proof, and both ordinary and partial differential equations. Because of my prior experience in physics and engineering, I am able to relate mathematics to real-world applications in ways that not everyone can.

My goal as a tutor is to ensure that my students gain a firm foundation in whatever subject they are studying and to give them the tools they need to progress to even higher levels of understanding. When possible, I use diagrams and software to provide visual representations of what’s going on in a particular problem. Beyond mastering a particular topic, I also like to help students gain an appreciation for both the beauty and power of mathematics.

I am known for my patience and approachable nature, and I always welcome questions. I look forward to working with you!

Calculus

Calculus

I am a long-time teacher and tutor of all levels of calculus, including multivariate and advanced calculus. I like to present the intuitive concepts of calculus along with the necessary calculations in order to help students develop a more complete understanding of the material. Many calculus topics can be visualized with modern graphing technology, which I use as well. I have also served as a reviewer of several calculus textbooks.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I first began tutoring co-workers in differential equations when I was working as an engineer and have since taught many courses in both ordinary and partial differential equations. My doctoral work was in this area, and I have published peer-reviewed journal articles on applications of DEs to physics and engineering. In teaching these courses, I have often supplemented textbooks with my own notes, examples, diagrams, and projects. My students have found these courses to be both useful and interesting.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I enjoy teaching linear algebra because of its many connections to other areas of mathematics and to diverse applications in engineering, physical sciences, computer science, and economics. When teaching this material, I like to illustrate the geometric ideas behind the theorems and calculations, and also point out relevant applications. I have used linear algebra extensively in my own work involving signal and image processing, number theory, and differential equations.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have over 30 years of experience teaching and tutoring precalculus topics. I try to help students learn not only the particular topic at hand but also to see the relationships with other topics they have studied. This helps students to truly master the material and retain their knowledge. I make frequent use of diagrams and graphing technology to help understand the concepts.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I have over 30 years of experience teaching and tutoring trigonometry. The applications of trigonometry are vast and present in everyday life. I try to help students learn not only the particular topic at hand but also to see the relationships with other topics they have studied. This helps students to truly master the material and retain their knowledge. I make frequent use of diagrams and graphing technology to help understand the concepts.

Outstanding tutor - 1 hour is a week of class

For college level linear algebra class, Roger spent an hour and delivered nearly what a week of college lectures could not -- a clear understanding of the theory, an intuitive grasp of the the concepts, and a good style.

Knowledgeable, intuitive tutor

Rogers not only knows the content, but he knows how to break down the skills. He also listens to the student to find out how to best help. He is responsive to the needs of the learner and has helped my son tremendously with content and confidence.
