Hi, I'm Courtney! I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and teaching license certification in grade K-6. I spent 11 years teaching 1st grade, 5th grade, and 2nd grade from 2012 - 2023. I took a brief step back to be home with my children, but it wasn't long before my teacher heart missed working with children; so, I found my way to Wyzant to tutor and now you've found me!
As a former teacher I bring a level of instructional experience that not all have. I know how to create, implement, and adapt lessons to each learner I work with during my sessions to meet their needs; because one size does not fit all when it comes to learning. I also know one of the quickest ways to ensure success with any student is to make a quick, meaningful connection; so at the beginning of each session we will tell each other something we're happy about or looking forward to right now or something silly that makes us laugh. We will then do a quick fun introduction to the lesson, followed by explicit instruction utilizing the "I do, We do, You do" structure. I will do an example of the work, then we'll do a large chunk together, and then you get to show what you know working independently. During independent work time I'll be able to see if the skill is mastered or if we need to continue to practice together and what adaptations need to be made as we work towards proficiency.
As a former teacher I know that there is certain language that teachers use when teaching phonics/reading and mathematics as well as specific programs and materials. I would love to keep things consistent and can make any adaptations to the words I'm using while teaching and will happily implement any materials or resources you find helpful or most beneficial to the tutoring session. I had several fifth grade students that I did summer tutoring with specifically on writing essays. They can seem daunting and by chunking them into sections and providing detailed outlines we were able to create a system and formula that was a great step by step for them to follow. It helped them tremendously in their transition to sixth grade and the middle school expectations.
