I'm a life-long learner. Check out my profile picture; I'm having lunch in a traditional family hutong home in Beijing, China! Take hold of every opportunity you're given to learn; the more you learn, the more you'll want to know! The world keeps changing; life long learners are always building upon their natural talents & abilities and learning new ones!

I've been an educator for years. I've taught AD and BSN nursing students (campus, clinical, online), MBA students (online), Bible college students (writing, computer usage, & science mostly), pre-school through high school home school students in courses as diverse as writing, geography, drama, public speaking, and character, plus non-academic subjects such as cooking, piano lessons, and gardening.

Surprisingly, my goal is to work myself out of a job! I see myself as your coach, not just a dispenser of information. When we're finished working together, our goal is that you've become a successful, independent learner, capable of mastering the subject on your own, and transferring your skills to future learning opportunities. After assessing where you are and where you need to be in terms of mastering your subject content, we'll explore what learning strategies work best for you so we can reinforce your strengths. You'll help construct our sessions. To equip students, I practice the 5 I's: Instruct (tell you), illustrate (show you), involve (do it with you), improve (you do it with me watching), and inspire you, which is self-explanatory! I also include critical thinking in every session plus build your skills in studying, organization, reading, and writing because it is important to nail down those basics.

Beginning nursing students: I'd welcome the opportunity to help you get a strong start. Ideally, we'll meet at least one month before you start your program and do some strategic planning. This 2-3 hour session will give you a strong start, get your time management plan nailed down, give you a variety of resources that can speed along your understanding and application of lecture content and help you prepare both for clinical and exams, help you build your library of "essentials" to speed along your study time, and keep you healthy! Nursing school is stressful, but being proactive will go a long way toward helping you succeed! After this session, you will probably only need a tutor to help you with material you find more challenging.

Thanks for taking time to read my introduction; you can read more about me on the Subjects tab. One final thought: It is not what we 'pour' into our students that is important; it is what we 'plant' that counts. Spark plugs may be small, but they can make all the difference in your world!

Study Skills

Study skills are foundational! I’ve enjoyed teaching two online high school English courses in a college prep environment for over ten years. The first semester course focuses on developing study skills: organizational tools for home & school, goal-setting, a conducive study environment, comprehension (how to read specific types of materials such as instructions, textbooks, charts/diagrams; discerning the main idea; understanding vocabulary/technical words), taking notes, summarizing, writing outlines, time & task management, developing study schedules, tackling specific types of projects (homework, writing assignments, long-term projects), and test-taking strategies. The second semester course reinforces these skills as well as giving added attention to outlines and writing research papers.

I hold both a BSN and MSN which required language arts, writing, research papers, and courses applying these skills. High school/college - I tutored online upper high school-early college classes in English grammar and research writing from 1999-2012. I’ve also held various university faculty positions for over 10 years in which I helped assist and guide students with their research papers. Master’s, Business professionals - I’ve tutored MBA and Master’s level nursing students with their research papers. We review topic brainstorming, paper organization (outline), research, support of the thesis or pico(t), and adherence to required guidelines.

Nursing,

Nursing

I have earned both a BSN and MSN (in nursing). I have 7-8 years in nursing education in ADN, BSN programs in the classroom, clinical, and online. I've also spent a combined 17 years in nurse case management, pediatrics and geriatrics and have taught online since 1999 in a wide variety of topics. I'm something of a "super-generalist" in that I've worked the entire age span, from childbirth education to geriatrics and end-of-life. Two tutoring specialties: 1. I enjoy helping new nursing students get a strong start in terms of resources, study skills, time management, and some life balance to help counteract the stress typical of nursing school. I do my best to individualize a plan depending on each student's needs and learning strengths. 2. I love helping BSN/MSN students develop PICOTs and plan/write their research proposal papers. My background and experience in teaching writing, in particular the writing of research papers, is a plus!

Nutrition

Nutrition

My interest in nutrition began in college with my nursing classes. Over the years my own health necessitated that I take additional classes as well as undertake significant self-study in nutrition (not a class often taught in medical school, by the way). I've taught both basic and advanced nutrition college courses using textbooks written for nursing students for the past ten years. I also read voraciously and usually take a variety of nutrition classes myself every year. My special interests are gluten & dairy free, plant-based diets, Feingold, dehydrating foods, and raw foods. I am not a certified nutritionist, or a registered dietitian, but I am a registered nurse. If you need some help in any of these areas, I’d be glad to help.

Wonderful and caring tutor!

Shara helped me with some Nursing test taking skills, maternity, and nursing research. She is so compassionate for teaching and always encouraged me to think positive. She understood my frustration in the subject and even met me on times other than time that was scheduled. She also went above and beyond by sending me what we done in the lesson but added extra resources to it that she thought might be helpful (wish it was). Shara let know she would be there again if I needed her (I'm sure I will!). She has a sense of calmness to her so she easy to talk with. (Like therapy) Great experience with her!

Instrumental in my success

I was so ecstatic to find someone to help me with my research projects in nursing, especially since I’m a master’s level FMP student. She’s been instrumental in my success! Sometimes, I’m not sure how to approach a particular project, but after talking with her, I have a strong sense of direction. What’s more, she even follows up to make sure I’m on track. Also, once you’re done drafting a paper, she provides you with great recommendations for improving it. Moreover, she’s very easy for international students to get along with. I highly recommend booking multiple sessions with her!

Nursing Tutor

Shara is nothing short of amazing! She is truly empathetic to where you are and what you can realistic achieve! I guarantee her services to any nursing student currently lost and on the brink of "dropping or failing out"! She will definitely guide you in the right direction, all the while cheering you on! As your success is ultimately hers! I truly feel I found more than a tutor; instead I have a tutor, mentor and friend. Thank you Shara for everything that you do!

Tutor responded:

Thank you, Tenika! You are going to be an awesome nurse leader in just a few short years. Your business degree and healthcare management experience are a perfect pairing for your nursing degree; you will be able to help our healthcare system move into the future and truly meet consumer health needs. I'm excited to have just a little hand in you getting there. To be sure the hard work is yours, but being able to come alongside is fulfilling; it gives me hope for the future of nursing and healthcare. Again, thank you for your kind words!

Best Tutor

Shara is an outstanding tutor, I couldn't have asked for a better tutor. I had her for only one session to help me with my essay to get into Law School and just that one session she gave me so much valuable feedback and helped enhance my essay. At the end of the session she even offered to help me through my final drafts; she truly cares about helping you through it all. I would recommend her to anyone that needs a tutor especially in writing.
