I'm a life-long learner. Check out my profile picture; I'm having lunch in a traditional family hutong home in Beijing, China! Take hold of every opportunity you're given to learn; the more you learn, the more you'll want to know!

I've been an educator for years. I've taught AD, BSN, Master, and PhD nursing students (campus, clinical, online), MBA students (online), Bible college students (writing, computer usage, & science mostly), pre-school through high school home school students in courses as diverse as writing, geography, drama, public speaking, and character, plus non-academic subjects such as cooking, piano lessons, and gardening.

Surprisingly, my goal is to work myself out of a job! I see myself as your coach. When we're finished working together, our goal is that you've become a successful, independent learner, capable of mastering the subject on your own, and transferring your skills to future learning opportunities. After assessing where you are and where you need to be in terms of mastering your subject content, we'll explore what learning strategies work best for you so we can build upon your strengths. You'll help construct our sessions. I also include critical thinking in every session plus build your skills in studying, organization, reading, and writing because it is important to nail down those basics.

Beginning nursing students: Let's meet at least one month before you start your program and do some strategic planning. This session will give you a strong start, get your time management plan nailed down, give you a variety of resources that can speed along your understanding and application of lecture content and help you prepare both for clinical and exams, help you build your library of "essentials" to speed along your study time, and keep you healthy! Nursing school is stressful, but being proactive will go a long way toward helping you succeed!

Spark plugs may be small, but they can make all the difference in your world!

Cooking

Cooking

I've been cooking all my life. I've studied and taught various aspects of cooking and using whole foods for the past 20 years. My special interests are gluten & dairy free, a plant-based diet, dehydrating foods, and raw cooking, which admittedly seems a little odd to list under 'cooking.' I have personal experience rotating my own diet to avoid significant food allergies. I've taught both basic and advanced nutrition courses in an online format for a college for over ten years. I’m not a chef, certified nutritionist, or a registered dietitian, but I am a registered nurse. If you need some help in any of these areas, I’d be glad to help.
English

English

Excelling in your English courses will help you become an overall better communicator, strengthen your writing skills, particularly in preparation for upper level courses, and help you to understand human perspectives developed by reading a wide variety of literature. I focus primarily on written and oral communication and development of your ability to express your thoughts, beliefs, and ideas in writing. I hold both a BSN and MSN which required language arts, writing, research papers, and courses applying these skills. High school/college - I tutored online upper high school-early college classes in English grammar and research writing from 1999-2012. I’ve also held various university faculty positions for over 10 years in which I helped assist and guide students with their research papers. Master’s, Business professionals - I’ve tutored MBA and Master and PhD level nursing students with their research. We review topic brainstorming, paper organization (outline), research, support of the thesis or pico(t), and adherence to required guidelines.
HESI (Nursing exam)

HESI (Nursing exam)

While I'm familiar with the various subject content of these pre-nursing examinations, my strength lies in showing students how to strategically prepare to take the exam, beginning with identifying their strengths and areas in which they should strive to strengthen their score. Identifying areas your program will check for high scores is important and further focuses your studies. Using relevant resources that align with your learning type, developing a solid study plan and offering support and some level of accountability, if needed, can likewise be important. Nursing students should remember that they will need to know this information because it is foundational for their upcoming studies so review the material for application not just to pass this one exam.
Nursing

Nursing

I hold both a BSN, MSN, and CCM (Case Manager certification). I'm a strong patient Health Educator, Advocate, a Faith and Health Ambassador, and a TBRI practitioner. I have 7+ years in nursing education in ADN, BSN programs in the classroom, clinical, and online and a combined 17 years in nurse case management, including pediatrics, behavioral health, maternal/child, geriatrics, community health, and HC Leadership. I suppose I'm something of a "super-generalist" in that I've worked the entire age span, from childbirth education to end-of-life. In addition, I've tutored online part time since 1999 in a wide variety of topics including working with BSN and nursing post grads (through DNP) with nursing research and evidence-based research projects. I particularly enjoy three types of tutoring: 1) I enjoy meeting with new nursing students at least once BEFORE they start their first course to help them get a strong start in terms of resources, study skills, time management, and retaining life balance to help counteract the stress typical of nursing school. I do my best to individualize a plan depending on each student's needs and learning strengths. 2) I love research! I like to help BSN/MSN/DNP students develop PICOTs, find and critique research articles, and plan/write research proposal papers. 3) I also love to help all individuals, not just students, build their health knowledge to better understand their health condition(s), understand how to navigate the health care system & work with their provider and other community resources, primarily learning how to be their own health advocate and build a team that will help them reach their personal health goals. This includes doing some reading and research, learning how to keep your own health and medication records, understanding special diets and how to prepare delicious foods on those diets, and making recommended lifestyle changes easier and even fun!
Nutrition

Nutrition

My interest in nutrition and health education began in college with my nursing classes. Over the years my own health necessitated that I take additional classes as well as undertake significant self-study in nutrition (not a class often taught in medical school, by the way). I also taught both basic and advanced nutrition courses for over ten years. I read voraciously and take a variety of nutrition classes myself every year. My special interests are gluten & dairy free, plant-based diets, Feingold, dehydrating foods, raw foods, and growing your own food. I am not a certified nutritionist, or a registered dietitian, but I hold a master degree in nursing, am a Master Gardener, and I'm a Certified Case Manager with experience across the age span, children to elders. Health education draws from many fields including biology, environmental science, psychology, and the physical and medical sciences. If you need some help in any of these areas or simply want to learn more about self-advocacy for your own health, I’d be glad to help.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I've taught online writing and research courses since 1999. I'm happy to help you format and edit your research and other papers.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

This is one of people’s most prevalent fears. If it’s yours, it is time to battle this ‘beast’ to the ground! I've taught public speaking skills as part of drama and speech classes for K-12 and practiced them regularly myself as a college lecturer and regular public speaker for the past 30 years. Being an effective communicator increases our self-confidence, makes us more comfortable with our verbal and non-verbal communication skills with people, and helps us boost our creativity and critical thinking skills, a plus in college, careers, and life. We’ll use any upcoming speech you may have to start honing your skills in audience, preparation, content, organization, delivery, and analysis at the same time as we study & practice a variety of speech types (informative, persuasive, demonstrative, special occasion, etc), and become aware of your personal speech habits & characteristics, improve posture, poise, voice, diction, pacing, and more. We can include Keynote or PowerPoint presentations if you'll be using an audiovisual for your speech.
Study Skills

Study Skills

Study skills are foundational! I’ve enjoyed teaching two online high school English courses in a college prep environment for over ten years. The first semester course focuses on developing study skills: organizational tools for home & school, goal-setting, a conducive study environment, comprehension (how to read specific types of materials such as instructions, textbooks, charts/diagrams; discerning the main idea; understanding vocabulary/technical words), taking notes, summarizing, writing outlines, time & task management, developing study schedules, tackling specific types of projects (homework, writing assignments, long-term projects), and test-taking strategies. The second semester course reinforces these skills as well as giving added attention to outlines and writing research papers.

TEAS

The definition of evidence base practice!

I do not have any words to express how grateful I am to come across Shara. I been having a difficult time understanding nursing school in general. She found a way to combine all my classes in one to give a better understanding of nursing school and gave me many resources to use to get through nursing school. Let me not forget, she also gave me awesome testing tips! I will keep on having online sessions with her. She kept it simple! I actually retained more in an hour than sitting in a nursing lecture where they basically read off powerpoints. Shara is the true definition of a TEACHER! I would highly recommend her for nursing school.

I recently worked with Shara for the first time, and I was genuinely impressed. Even though it was our first session together, she was incredibly patient, prepared, and supportive. She explained concepts in a way that made sense to me and helped me feel more confident in my understanding.

Patient and encouraging

I came to Shara for tutoring when I was truly struggling in nursing school. I found it so hard to understand and retain everything before exams, and I felt overwhelmed. But Shara changed that for me. She was patient, encouraging, and walked with me every step of the way—not just through nursing school, but all the way to the NCLEX. Her tutoring sessions were more than just study time; they were confidence-building moments. Shara helped me learn how to critically think like a nurse, and that made all the difference. I actually looked forward to our sessions because I knew I was learning and growing with her guidance. Fun fact: before I took the NCLEX, one of my professors doubted I would pass on the first try. But I did it—I passed on my first attempt—and Shara played a huge role in making that happen. I truly couldn’t have done it without her support and belief in me. She not only helped me succeed, but also reminded me that I was capable, every step of the way.

Simply Amazing

I am so glad that I found Shara. Shara taught me a lot in a short period of time. She answered pertinent questions that I had and she was able to help me think outside of the box. She asked thought provoking questions that will be able to help me with my DNP scholarly project. Shara just felt at home, very personable and reassuring. I look forward to many more sessions with her.
