I gather this is where I am supposed to tell you how great I am. Alas, I've never taken to self-aggrandizement like a fish to water. So, let me just tell you how I got here!

I gather this is where I am supposed to tell you how great I am. Alas, I've never taken to self-aggrandizement like a fish to water. So, let me just tell you how I got here!

Once upon a time, back in the mid 1990s, I started teaching SAT, GRE, GMAT, and LSAT classes for the Princeton Review. My high SAT, GRE, and LSAT scores landed me that job. Though I had previously shied away from getting in front of groups of people (I'm more of a bookworm), I discovered to some astonishment that I was actually quite good at teaching. After going back to school to study the ancient Maya at Yale (where I was a Fulbright Scholar and a Getty Scholar) I started teaching LSAT and GMAT again eleven years ago, beginning with a company (Educational Testing Consultants) that provides classes through university continuing education programs. The past five years I have also tutored dozens of individual students, mostly for the LSAT and GRE, mostly one-on-one, and mostly online. I have also taught more than a dozen LSAT classes.

My approach to teaching varies from student to student--everything is customized--though I do emphasize fundamentals. I have had MANY students, especially LSAT students, who came away from classes or previous tutors poorly served on the fundamentals. But if a student just needs some fine-tuning, fine-tuning it is!. My primary concern is to meet the needs of the student. In session, students find me energetic with a dry sense of humor, occasionally punctuated by the occasional bit of sarcasm regarding authority and institutions.

When I am not teaching, I am a serious mostly-amateur photographer (I've sold my work at art fairs, but photography remains a net drain on my bank account!) and a woodworker. My current woodworking project is experimental archaeology, in which I am working on reproductions of ancient Egyptian wood artifacts.

A very high score on the LSAT helped me land a job with the Princeton Review, for which I taught LSAT classes before returning to graduate school. Since grad school I have taught LSAT classes for Educational Testing Consultants (which offers classes through university continuing education programs) and via Varsity Tutors. I have tutored dozens of LSAT students one-on-one as well, mostly through Varsity Tutors. All in all, I have over 15 years of experience helping students tackle the LSAT.

Highly reccomended tutor

Before working with James, I had been studying for nine months for about eight hours a day. However, my LSAT score remained the exact same. I had also invested over $4,000 in an online program, and followed it strenuously only for nothing to improve. I didn’t really know what else to do so I began looking for a one on one tutor to try and pinpoint where I was going wrong. Truthfully, I didn’t expect much because I thought that I had nearly seen every technique available. However, within just a few lessons with James, things just started to come together. I finally understood what I was doing wrong and we practiced until I fixed it. The way that he approached tutoring made studying far less overwhelming, and for the first time, I actually started to like studying for LSAT. I not once felt embarrassed or upset for missing questions or forgetting/mixing up concepts but rather I felt like when I would miss a question, it was more of an opportunity for me to gain more knowledge about why a concept is wrong versus right. I also stopped spending countless hours studying and instead just focused strictly on the strategies and notes that we would discuss. Asa result of all of this, on my LSAT I was able to achieve a 160 (my goal score) which is a 16 point increase from where I had begun. I highly recommend James; the techniques he taught me were insanely valuable, and I really don’t believe that I would have made this kind of progress without his help.

Very Knowledgeable

My son just had another tutoring session with James. My son is typically anxious about any test and taking the LSAT has pushed him to the max. We just want to thank James on our son's behalf. We have never seen our son so confident and at ease when about to take a standardized test. He's told us that James is great at giving him helpful hints and analyzing errors. I have not sat in on any of the tutoring sessions, but the way my son tells us about them speaks volumes about how good a teacher James is. We so appreciate all the time and patience and help he's given our son.

Engaging and Affable

James T. is an excellent tutor who was able to relatively quickly help me to reach my goal LSAT score. I also found him to be both funny and understanding of what it is like to prepare for one of these tests. He is both affordable and worth more than he charges. If you are looking for someone who is able to break down everything to their simple parts, he is the ideal tutor for you.

LSAT tutoring

James is thorough and systematic in his approach to helping one understand the technical aspects of each question. He is extremely patient and presents concepts in a way that is easily understood and immensely helpful.

Insightful & helpful

James helped me to improve my techniques and approach towards the LSAT logical reasoning games. He demonstrated his methodology on a few difficult examples in a way that was easy to replicate and will transfer over on the actual test. Would fully endorse
