Hi! I'm Karrin, and I'm so happy you've decided to learn about one of my favorite subjects: Chemistry! I earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Kansas State University (KSU) and a Master of Science in Chemistry from The University of Utah (the U), with a 4.0 for both.
I have been a teaching assistant, with office hours that resembled tutoring sessions, for a total of about 17 months. At KSU, I was a teaching assistant for the undergraduate Chemistry 1 Laboratory for one semester. I was in charge of my section from the introduction of proper laboratory techniques to grading, and I took the time to ask students purposeful questions to encourage them to connect their observations to the concepts they were learning in lecture. At the U, I was a teaching assistant for the undergraduate General Chemistry 1 Lecture for an entire school year (August-May) and for the undergraduate General Chemistry 2 Lecture (an asynchronous online class, except for office hours) during the summer semester. With my varied responsibilities, I gained experience preparing presentations with concept review and practice problems, facilitating large-group discussions (100+ students), teaching individuals and small groups (1-10 students) during my office hours, and constructing study guides. I learned about and encouraged strategies such as Dual Coding, Retrieval Practice, and Spaced Practice. The students who attended my office hours often told me that they found them very helpful!
I personally learn much better by seeing than by hearing, so I often teach with drawings and diagrams. I believe that understanding a concept is more valuable than getting a good quiz grade, but that understanding leads to good grades. I am most interested in being a tutor for high school chemistry and undergraduate General Chemistry 1 and 2.
