Hello! My name is John Winings, and I’m a graduate student at Purdue University studying astrodynamics. I’ve always been drawn to the challenges of problem-solving and critical thinking, which led me to pursue both my undergraduate and graduate degrees in aerospace engineering. I also earned minors in math and management, which have complemented my technical education with broader analytical and organizational skills.

I enjoy helping others develop a deeper understanding of subjects like math and physics. I believe learning is most effective when concepts are broken down into manageable pieces, allowing students to truly grasp the reasons behind each step instead of just memorizing formulas. That’s what I love about tutoring: seeing students gain confidence as they connect the dots and begin solving problems independently.

Physics has played a major role in my academic journey. Courses like Physics 1 and 2 have been incredibly valuable, not just for the material, but for the problem-solving mindset they helped me build. I hope to pass along that mindset and support students in getting the most out of their own math and science classes. I’m flexible with scheduling and happy to answer any questions. I look forward to working with you.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I’ve just completed my minor in mathematics and as an aerospace engineering undergrad at Purdue, I use math every single day.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I am currently majoring in aeronautical and astronautical engineering at purdue, and I am pursuing a minor in mathematics, so math is integral to my coursework. I got a 36/36 on the act math section, and I’ve tutored many students in algebra and algebra 2 in the past including a few I’m still tutoring in their new higher level math classes.
Chess

Chess

I have been an avid chess player since childhood. I was co-president and played "first board" for my high school. I am a member of the Purdue chess club. In my best online time control, I'm rated 2150.
Physics

Physics

I currently tutor a few college students in physics 1 and 2. I have tutored high schoolers in the past in the subject raising their grades by two letter grades at times and maintaining high performance with others. I use physics every day as an aeronautical and astronautical engineering undergrad student.

Flexible and Helpful

John tutored me for my engineering physics 1 class I took this summer. He met with me on very short notice and at times which were convenient for me. He adapted a style of teaching which worked best for me. I would work out a problem and he would step in to help when I got stumped. He would also double back to make sure I knew what the question was asking and how the answer made sense from a conceptual point of view. All in all, he helped me to understand physics in a way that connect the formulas I was given to what the questions were asking me to solve. I would highly recommend him to anyone.

Connects well with my daughter and patient!

John is a great tutor and we recommend for Physics. My daughter struggles with physics and is able to follow his teaching style. He is patient and was flexible when working with my daughters busy schedule.
