About Christopher

I am currently an Adjunct Instructor at Ivy Tech Lafayette and Harrison College. I teach a variety of introductory mathematics courses at and around the college algebra level. I was a teaching assistant for the physics department at Purdue University for four years.

I have consistently high student reviews and take great pride in that. To me, tutoring any subject is about so much more than showing students how to solve specific problems. Learning any subject means learning a new way of thinking. My job is primarily to help the student identify what misconceptions or difficulties are preventing them from thinking about the subject the way that an expert would. I try to use Socratic teaching and carefully chosen examples to make that happen.

I have a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics, a master's degree in physics, and years of experience teaching physics and mathematics at the college level.

Most of my research experience as a graduate student was in computational physics, using C. I was a grader and teaching assistant for a graduate level computational physics course focusing on MATLAB for several years.

Please get in touch with me for tutoring in any area of physics or mathematics, or for programming in C or MATLAB. I have a flexible schedule and will probably be available at a time that's convenient for you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

C

I've taken a course specifically in C programming. More significantly, I've used C in the course of my research. I've been published for computational physics work conducted entirely with C code, which I heavily amended. I've been a grader and teaching assistant for a graduate level computational physics course. While most of the students in that course used MATLAB, I think that serves to show that I do have experience helping students with programming.

Calculus

I took a three-semester calculus sequence as an undergraduate. But more than that, in the course of my graduate studies in physics I used calculus on a daily basis. It's a fundamental skill which finds applications in every area of physics, and I would never have been able to complete my studies without mastering calculus.

Linear Algebra

I've taken a course in linear algebra, of course. (Passed with an A.) But, more significantly, linear algebra is very very widely used in physics. It's been a part of every physics course I've taken in the course of both of my degrees, and most of the mathematics courses to boot. I have a BS degree in mathematics from Purdue University.

MATLAB

I was a grader and teaching assistant for a graduate level computational physics course at Purdue University. The class was taught using MATLAB and the majority of the students used MATLAB for all of their exercises and assignments. I have a lot of experience helping students familiar with programming in a language like C or Java who tend to avoid using the built-in features of MATLAB that make it so convenient for numerical work. I've used MATLAB myself for projects in several courses.

Physics

I hold a masters degree in physics from Purdue university, where I was a teaching assistant in the physics department for four years. During my time there I conducted recitation sections for numerous classes, was the instructor of record for a summer class, and authored portions of a laboratory manual still in use.

I would recommend — Christopher helped me with roots. I understand them better today than I did when I was in high school! I definitely recommend. ...
