I’m Grant Simpson, a current mechanical engineering student at Purdue University and an active member of Purdue Chess Club. I began playing chess near the beginning of Covid, becoming captivated by the game’s depth and beauty. Since then, I’ve played multiple OTB tournaments and thousands of games online, climbing to an OTB rating of 1825 USCF with a peak online rating of 2550. Due to my personal experience as a self-taught player, I know exactly how hard it can be to feel stuck and frustrated with no coach or tutor to give advice. By providing students with what I wish I’d had, I hope to use my knowledge and experience to help you reach your goals.
I discovered my passion for teaching chess through my high school club, where I analyzed my teammates’ games and explained my thought process to help them improve. Beyond chess, as a Design Lead, Chief Engineer, and Machine Shop Employee, I’ve led teams of engineers through projects and provided valuable knowledge and skills to students whenever needed. I developed greatly as a teacher from these experiences, gaining skills in communicating clearly and listening intently.
Through our lessons, I will:
-Tailor the lessons to your needs. I’ll learn your strengths and weaknesses to help you improve.
-Provide you tools to improve. As a self-taught player, I know the best youtube channels, websites, and free tools that can help you learn on your own.
-Make it fun! People learn best when the process is fun, and chess is a game that we all play to enjoy. I will create lessons that both challenge and entertain you.
Whether you’re a beginner just starting the game or an experienced player at a frustrating plateau, I’m excited to help you get to the next level. Please contact me with any questions!
