Over the past fifteen years, I have taught English and Social Science courses in Continuing Education programs and at community colleges, Liberal Arts colleges, and universities. During that time, I have found that working with undergraduates and dual enrollment students on a one-to-one basis has proven to be the most rewarding aspect of teaching.

The individualized sessions I have held with students allow us to set a pace that gives them ample time to raise questions, delve deeper into necessary background materials, gain additional practice, and explore connections between the course content and some of their own life experiences. My aim is to have a student always come out of a tutoring session or individual conference with an elevated sense of self-confidence stemming from their greater interest in, and command over, a particular course subject.

Whether they are enrolled in a small class at a liberal arts college or in a large course at a public university, many students often begin our first instructor-student conference or tutoring session by making a self-deprecatory remark about their writing. While recognizing that a student’s lack of self-confidence in his/her writing ability has many causes, I have attempted to address this pervasive problem by offering tutoring sessions that are guided by three interrelated principles that also inform my teaching as a whole: teach the “form” of writing by focusing on content; foster an appreciation for reading that is then directed toward the act of writing; evaluate each student’s progress in light of a customized set of goals.
