Hi! My name is Jill and I'm a biologist and science educator with a Ph.D. in Biological Science and an active Indiana teaching license in Life Sciences. Hi! My name is Jill and I'm a biologist and science educator with a Ph.D. in Biological Science and an active Indiana teaching license in Life Sciences. I earned my Ph.D. back in 2007 and I've been teaching science in different formats ever since. I've taught at both the high school and college levels and truly enjoy working with people.
I love working with students and helping them get past "this is overwhelming and confusing" to "Hey, this is kindof cool" to "I get it!!" Science gets more fun the more you understand, so my job is definitely to help you put those pieces together. I've spent a lot of time working with students to accomplish just that, and I get a ton of satisfaction when that light bulb goes off! My favorite thing is when the grades and test scores start going up - it is really gratifying for me to know I helped!
When I started my own journey learning science, I wasn't prepared at all! My high school science exposures weren't very good and I didn't learn much. When I went to college, I had to learn it all the hard way. But I did, and that also means I understand exactly where and why things can get confusing. I have extensive experience writing curriculum and assessments, so whether it is a difficult concept, homework or study habits, test prep, lab concepts, or simply catching up...I'm your gal!
And so you know, my teaching style is patient, friendly, conversational, and very individualized. Not all students learn the same way, so we'll figure out what you need and then focus on those tools and approaches. The most important part is that I want you to leave a tutoring session with a much higher comfort level. And (this is important) my goal is to help you understand it so it makes sense to you, not just memorizing something long enough to pass. I want you to LEARN.
