Hi! I'm Curtis, and I hope you'll select me to be your tutor.
I tutor math full-time and have helped hundreds of students build skills, improve their grades, and gain the confidence so important for success in math. I truly enjoy working individually with students and helping them reach their potential. My experience has helped me understand the many reasons students struggle, and I often use visual aids, diagrams, and creative explanations to make concepts clearer.
I tutor middle school and high school math, and I also work with students preparing for math competitions. I am the author of a forthcoming book on problem-solving strategies for the AMC and MathCounts competitions.
My tutoring is always tailored to each student's strengths and needs. I aim to create a relaxed atmosphere where students feel comfortable asking questions without fear of being wrong. When a student makes a mistake, I see it as an opportunity to discover the source of the confusion and address it directly. This often leads to a clearer understanding and those satisfying "aha!" moments when concepts finally click.
Students studying pre-algebra and algebra 1 come across new terms and symbols that may be confusing at first. Terms like "associative property" or the use of letters like "x" and "y" often cause students to think the ideas are harder than they are. I help students see that these letters are just symbols for a number. I often use diagrams or visual aids to explain a new topic, or a balance scale to show how to solve an equation.
I welcome feedback from students and parents to ensure my tutoring is helping the student. I can be reached easily, and strive to do everything possible to help a student.
I graduated from MIT near the top of my class with a BS degree in Math and a minor in physics. I have many years of classroom experience teaching Grades 6-12 math. I have also developed math educational software and have written articles on strategies for helping students who are struggling with math.
