Hi! I'm Curtis, and I hope you'll select me to be your tutor.

I tutor math full-time and have helped hundreds of students build skills, improve their grades, and gain the confidence so important for success in math. I truly enjoy working individually with students and helping them reach their potential. My experience has helped me understand the many reasons students struggle, and I often use visual aids, diagrams, and creative explanations to make concepts clearer.

I tutor middle school and high school math, and I also work with students preparing for math competitions. I am the author of a forthcoming book on problem-solving strategies for the AMC and MathCounts competitions.

My tutoring is always tailored to each student's strengths and needs. I aim to create a relaxed atmosphere where students feel comfortable asking questions without fear of being wrong. When a student makes a mistake, I see it as an opportunity to discover the source of the confusion and address it directly. This often leads to a clearer understanding and those satisfying "aha!" moments when concepts finally click.

Students studying pre-algebra and algebra 1 come across new terms and symbols that may be confusing at first. Terms like "associative property" or the use of letters like "x" and "y" often cause students to think the ideas are harder than they are. I help students see that these letters are just symbols for a number. I often use diagrams or visual aids to explain a new topic, or a balance scale to show how to solve an equation.

I welcome feedback from students and parents to ensure my tutoring is helping the student. I can be reached easily, and strive to do everything possible to help a student.

I graduated from MIT near the top of my class with a BS degree in Math and a minor in physics. I have many years of classroom experience teaching Grades 6-12 math. I have also developed math educational software and have written articles on strategies for helping students who are struggling with math.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have over 30 years of experience helping students master Algebra 1 and build confidence in their problem-solving skills. Algebra 1 introduces new levels of abstraction, including variables and equations, inequalities, graphing, and functions, which can feel overwhelming at first. I break these ideas into clear, understandable steps and use visual methods and real-world examples to make the concepts meaningful. My goal is to help students not only improve their grades, but also feel fully prepared for higher-level math.
AMC (Competition math)

AMC (Competition math)

I am an MIT graduate with many years of experience teaching and tutoring middle school and high school mathematics. I have helped students prepare for the AMC and other competition math exams by building strong problem-solving skills, logical reasoning, and mathematical confidence. My one-on-one tutoring is carefully tailored to each student’s strengths and learning style, and I also teach students techniques for time management. I find great satisfaction in helping students grow and reach their full potential, and I would enjoy the chance to help your child prepare for the AMC.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have more than 30 years of experience teaching and tutoring, and I've had great success helping students learn pre-algebra. I know students can struggle with the new terminology and ideas introduced in pre-algebra, such as variables, and I often use diagrams and visual aids to make these concepts easy to understand. I've successfully guided many students through these challenges and helped them develop solid skills and confidence. My goal is always to ensure students feel capable and ready for algebra.
