Hello, My name is Young. I am a native Korean teacher born and grew up in Seoul, South Korea. I earned a bachelor’s degree in fine art from Ewha Woman’s University and a master’s in Performing Arts and Education from Korean International University. My experience includes hosting seven solo exhibitions and many group exhibitions in different cities worldwide. I have earned an Honorable Mention from the Watercolor Society of Hawaii and several other awards, including a Grand Prize from the International Woman’s Art Festival in Seoul. I have also been appointed to judge for juried art exhibitions (2012 NEO-POX) in Seoul.

I have taught Art and English as a second language for over 17 years. Through all those experiences, I have developed teaching strategies and skills that I utilize to teach the Korean language to foreign speakers. I am genuinely passionate about teaching students who wish to learn the Korean language. One of my teaching principles is that to learn a foreign language effectively, one also needs to understand that the culture is intertwined with the language. As someone who had lived in Korea and studied Korean Culture professionally, I can teach Korean culture, K-pop, and K-drama to assist in their language learning.
I am a patient, encouraging, and creative teacher who knows how to teach efficiently and effectively.

I look forward to helping you reach your goals!

Great First Lesson

Prior to the first lesson, Youngkeun reached out very quickly to discuss my intentions and goals for the lessons. We also spoke about the frequency of the classes and availability. She was extremely accommodating when scheduling our classes (we're in different time zones). After scheduling our classes, she provided me with information on what book/workbook we were going to use (including a PDF). I was able to purchase both the book and workbook prior to the class. We started with a brief history of Hangeul at the beginning of class! It's very interesting to understand the writing prior to starting! We spent the remainder of the class learning a about a third of the letters. We went over different combinations to practice writing and reading. Although this process was difficult, Youngkeun was very patient and encouraging. She provided immediate feedback on words I was pronouncing, which was extremely helpful! I'm excited to see what my future classes will be like!

Grate teacher.

She is truly a wonderful teacher. I have no talent or ability at all, but she always encourages me with her kind words and patiently guides me. If you’ve always wanted to learn art but never had the chance when you were younger, I highly recommend taking her class.

Knowledgeable, kind, patient

I am half Korean and have been exposed to Korean for a long time. I've been nervous about trying to learn again because I feel like I should know more than I do, and am often embarrassed that I don't. Youngkeun is very kind and patient and she clearly cares about me learning. I've had some teachers be shaming and she is not that way. She is always supportive and kind when I have questions. I am learning a lot!

Encouraging

Really nice and encouraging. There's a bit of a lag in the video so it makes it seems like she's going faster than she actually is. That makes it a little difficult to communicate. I was really nervous but she was kind and cares about what she is teaching.

Great experience!

As a 2nd generation Korean American, I have struggled with my Korean language deficiency for decades. I have tried to improve by watching Korean language television, through self-study, and (in university) by spending time with Korean friends. After I decided that I needed assistance to attain an acceptable level of fluency, I looked into tutoring options. I was hesitant to try online tutoring, but my initial experience with this teacher was excellent! I strongly encourage anyone looking to learn or improve Korean language skills to reach out and book a lesson.
