About Phyllis

I was delighted this week when one of my students said "I like working with you because you make learning fun!" That is my goal in working with a student - to make it fun, because that is when learning surges forward.

My individualized tutoring uses lesson plans based on the individual learner’s strengths and interests. I use early sessions getting to know the learner and doing some basic assessment to determine their strengths and weaknesses. We build upon the strengths to address weaknesses. Examples of interest based tutoring: lessons for a 10 year old sports enthusiast might include reading about their favorite player, or watching a game and writing a report about it. Lessons for a 7 year old princess fan might include writing a story about her favorite character. Of course, I also work with your child’s school curriculum materials as well.

I am a retired Methodist minister, mother of three grown sons, grandmother of 8, Cub Scout leader, former teacher, and lifelong student. I have a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and two Master’s degrees from Christian Theological Seminary. Before my ministry career I taught high school and junior high science and English.

I formerly have tutored both children and adults at 14th & Chestnut Community Center in Terre Haute IN. I have also worked with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for many years. I am qualified by education and experience to teach reading, language arts, math, science and social studies, pre-K through 12.

Drawing upon my background in counseling and my experience with children and youth, I help each learner build self-esteem and confidence. I encourage them to take responsibility for their own learning as they grow in their ability to do this. My students soon realize that I care as much about them as a person as about the subject matter we are working on. I sincerely want them to discover the excitement and joy of learning!

I will welcome the opportunity to sit down with you and discuss the learning needs of your child or yourself. Together we will develop a plan for tutoring to address your particular situation.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have a Master of Divinity degree from Christian Theological Seminary, the requirements for which included 15 hours of graduate level Bible study. As a pastor I have taught numerous Bible classes including the rigorous Disciple Bible study courses. My approach to Bible study is text based. Taking historical context into consideration, what did the author intend to say to his listeners? To the extent possible I refrain from imposing my own theology upon the text, and encourage the learners to draw their own conclusions as to the application of the text for their own lives.

Common Core

I use Common Core standards as the basis for planning lessons in reading/language arts, math, social studies, and science. I want each learner to meet those standards before moving on to the next grade level in that subject. I do not do formal testing but do informal student-friendly assessment as part of our regular lessons. However, the tutoring does prepare the learner to have the confidence and capability to perform well on formal standardized tests.

Elementary Math

Although calculators are often permitted in the classroom, I think it is important for students to learn basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division math facts in order to work with fractions and algebraic functions later on. I use a variety of activities to facilitate learning, including manipulatives, number puzzles and games, and online practice.

ESL/ESOL

I have enjoyed tutoring a few ESL students and they have responded to me very positively to me. It is very exciting to me when a new English speaker begins to communicate in English. I use the Laubach method which I have used extensively with adult literacy learners. This helps the student learn reading and writing in addition to speaking. I have completed one course toward ESL certification.

Phonics

In addition to my extensive work with children, I have tutored adult learners for ten years using a multi-sensory phonics based approach. I am currently using the Orton Gillingham method with young readers who are struggling. This method is recommended for children who learn differently, especially those identified as dyslexic. Hearing, saying, seeing, and writing are all used to help a child learn basic decoding skills necessary for reading. I use a variety of learning experiences including games and large muscle exercises in addition to "paper and pencil" work.

Physical Science

I taught Physical Science in high school.

Prealgebra

I have always enjoyed algebra and have tutored students in pre-algebra through college algebra.

Proofreading

I can help students in organizing their material and documenting research. I can work with either APA or MLA formatting. I give special attention to sentence structure which clearly expresses the writer's ideas. I can help from the initial conception through research, writing, and the final revision of a paper.

Public Speaking

I have taken both undergraduate and graduate level speech courses in addition to courses in preaching. I have preached weekly for twenty years, a recognized strength of my ministry. I can teach about the types of public speaking and appropriate content for each. I can help the student organize his material and deliver it effectively.

Reading

In addition to my extensive work with children, I have tutored adult learners for ten years using a multi-sensory phonics based approach. I am currently using the Orton Gillingham method with young readers who are struggling. This method is recommended for children who learn differently, especially those identified as dyslexic. Hearing, saying, seeing, and writing are all used to help a child learn basic decoding skills necessary for reading. I use a variety of learning experiences including games and large muscle exercises. With older learners, I focus on guided reading of various kinds of writing, practice in summarizing, discussion of ideas and meaning, plus vocabulary building. I encourage the reading of recommended, age-appropriate literature.

Religion

I am a retired United Methodist minister. I have Master of Divinity and a Master of Sacred Theology degrees from Christian Theological Seminary. I have taught many and varied, both long-term and short-term, religion classes over the past 40 years.

Writing

I learned to write well when I was a senior in high school. With two graduate degrees, I have written many academic papers. I can help students in organizing their material and documenting research. I can work with either APA or MLA formatting. I give special attention to sentence structure which clearly expresses the writer's ideas. I can assist from the initial conception through research, writing, and the final revision of a paper.
