I am a native of Indianapolis, IN and have over 10 years of tutoring experience.

I obtained a BA in Economics/Biology from the University of Chicago. I have taught/tutored students of all ages from middle school to college level on both a paid and volunteer basis, primarily in a one on one and small group setting. I have been passionate about serving students from underserved or immigrant backgrounds. My past tutoring experience/students include elementary and middle school students in the Indianapolis area as part of an after school program, middle and high school students from under-resourced schools on Chicago's South Side, and fellow colleagues and classmates (peer tutoring), among others.

My main subjects and strengths include math (algebra, precalc, calculus, statistics; middle school to college level), core sciences (biology, chemistry, anatomy; physiology; high school to college level), and economics (micro, macro, health policy). I also have extensive experience with standardized tests and can assist with SAT, ACT, and MCAT prep. I have received 90 percentile+ scores on SAT/ACT (pre 2016), and the MCAT (post 2015). I have experience in programming and data analysis experience in several languages (Python, STATA, SAS, Tableau, and some others).

My overall approach to tutoring and teaching is that it is a two-sided affair. I recognize that it is not only the responsibility of the student to put in the effort to understand the material, but also the burden of the tutor to explain the concepts in an articulate, comprehensible, and digestible manner. The best professors and teachers I have had in the past embodied this approach. If something is not clicking, it is on the tutor to stay patient, be encouraging, and try new and alternative approaches. I strive to be a lifelong learner, and I also find that one of the best ways to truly master concepts is to teach. Each time I tutor, I find myself learning something new or nuanced which I incorporate into my knowledge base.

College Counseling

College Counseling

I obtained my BA in Economics from the University of Chicago, which has consistently ranked among the top undergraduate institutions in the US. I not only have successfully gained admission to a highly selective school via my own college application process, but also have experience advising many other students and friends on their applications and assisting with crafting the various components of their package, such as personal statements, supplemental essays, and extracurriculars. Through my own and others' processes, I have gained a lot of empirical insight into the competitive college admissions landscape and how to build a unique application with a compelling narrative that allows an individual to stand out from just their "numbers". I have strong writing skills and am happy to assist with essay writing and editing.

Great chemistry teacher, very patient!

Michael is really patient and great at explaining topics that you may be having difficulty with. He assisted me with an assignment I had been stuck on for a while, and after the session I was able to finish it relatively quickly. I would definitely recommend if you need help with Chemistry!

Helpful and Nice Tutor for English Essay Proofread

Michael helped my daughter with proofreading and editing her high school English essay. He made annotations and editing notes, and went over the essay together with her, which is exactly what we needed from the tutor. He also stayed slightly over time to finish the work. Thank you.

Very informative and Patient

I loved how Michael takes his time to help you understand the concepts of the topics discussed. He’s very patient, honest and will do whatever it takes to help you understand and even if he doesn’t know too much about the topic, he will find resources or links to send you and does his best to help you succeed in your exams. I will continue to have tutoring sessions with him for any future science courses I take. He’s excellent and I recommend him as an amazing tutor.
