Some of the ways I help writers to achieve their goals include support with:

In addition, I tutor students in literature, English language learning (ESL/EFL/ENL/ESOL), Spanish, European history, and religious studies.

Every writing lesson is an opportunity to learn, and I gently coach you and ask questions about what you want to say as I help you organize and express your ideas with clarity.

As a language teacher, I help resolve grammar and vocabulary questions, improve pronunciation, and assist with writing and speaking fluency.

I ask each student to prepare for the lesson by providing materials in advance and arriving to class with a purpose. We can set a reasonable objective for each class ahead of time, so we work toward a common goal.

Bio
I have taught English literature and composition, English language learners, Spanish, college success, and religious studies at universities and a high school for over a decade.

In addition, I have worked as a freelance writer, proofreader, copy editor, and Spanish-to-English translator for a total of three decades. Along with correcting a lot of student papers, I have edited and translated academic material including dissertations, scholarly monographs, and creative writing.

I hold three master’s degrees in comparative literature, religious studies, and European studies from Indiana University along with a graduate certificate in literary translation (Spanish). I also hold a high school teaching license in English as a New Language and English Language Arts. During my graduate studies, I focused on women writers in Spain and Latin America in the early modern era.

Approved Subjects

English

English

I hold a master's degree in comparative literature and have five semesters of experience as an instructor of English composition and literature at major universities. I also taught ESL in Mexico for about four years at language schools and universities, and I have continued to teach the subject as a private tutor. In addition, I help ESL students improve their conversation, presentation, and writing skills.
European History

European History

I have three master's degrees in European studies, comparative literature, and religious studies. During my graduate work, I focused on the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Europe and the Americas, particularly the Spanish-speaking countries. I am also knowledgeable about the medieval period in Europe, and the post-colonial era in Mexico.
Grammar

Grammar

I hold master's degree in comparative literature, European studies, and religious studies. As an instructor, I taught English as a Second Language for four years at universities and language schools in Mexico, and since then I have continued to tutor students privately. Aside from teaching grammar in my ESL classes, I have taught grammar, spelling, syntax, and punctuation for five semesters at the university level, and I use English (and Spanish) grammar in my role as a bilingual copy editor and proofreader.
Literature

Literature

I have a master's degree in comparative literature from Indiana University Bloomington (2022).
Proofreading

Proofreading

Since the mid-80s, I have done proofreading and copy editing in English and Spanish for a major type shop in New York City, for a big publisher in Mexico City, and for one of the "Big Five" publishers with multiple offices in the United States. I have also worked for smaller, independent presses and independent clients. My expertise ranges from fiction to nonfiction, with particular strengths in academic work, including dissertations. I'm also great at correcting resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles!
Reading

Reading

I hold a master's degree in comparative literature. I also taught English literature and composition for five semesters at two major universities, during which time I stressed a deep reading of the assigned texts. I taught students the importance of annotation, and through specific questions about the readings, helped students to better understand the text. I taught students to examine issues such as genre, voice, tone, and structure--and at times we did close readings of the text.
Religion

Religion

I hold a master's degree in religious studies. During my graduate studies, I took general classes such as comparative religion and more specific ones, such as Race, Religion, and Democracy. I mostly focused on literature and religion, and Spanish Catholicism, especially in the Renaissance/colonial period in Europe and the Americas.
Spanish

Spanish

Through intense studying of Spanish in a variety of programs and living in Mexico, I began working as a Spanish translator in 2004. I also tutored students in Spanish while living there. When I returned to the states, I taught second-year Spanish for two years at a major university, instructing students in grammar, vocabulary, oral communication, and culture. I continue to work as a translator, and my translation by an important Mexican author was recently published.
Writing

Writing

I hold a master's degree in comparative literature, and I have worked as a translator since 2004, meaning I rewrite texts in Spanish and convert them into English. I have also worked as a proofreader and editor for decades, and I am a published author. I taught English composition and literature for a total of five semesters at two large universities during which time I assisted students with the writing process, including theses, research, and structuring.

Delightful to work with and very knowledgeable

I chose Rowena as my English Comp tutor because she was familiar with the subject matter of my first essay. Three A's on three essays later, I know I made the right decision. Outside of her knowledge of the mechanics of writing, she provided me with her invaluable insight into my subject matter. She was responsive to messages and flexible with scheduling sessions. It was a true pleasure to work with Rowena. I would highly recommend her as a tutor.
