Life is about learning, and I love learning and sharing my own learning experiences with others. That's why I never call myself a tutor, but rather a learning coach. I believe in pushing you to take learning into your own hands, making it fun and encouraging you to push your limits and burst into outer space with knowledge!

At university, I spent 3 years tutoring college math and writing and received undergraduate certification in Teaching English as a New Language (TENL) through Indiana University (Fort Wayne) in 2014. Afterward, I worked as an assistant English foreign language instructor in Japan, team teaching for 3 years through the JET Program. I have coached students of all ages in a variety of subjects including math, English, Japanese, science, chess and even karate. I have also presented several developmental workshops at conferences and community centers, and even founded a regular English conversation course for adults in Kyonan, Chiba that extended beyond my required work in the public schools. I go above and beyond my job description simply out of love for my community and for learning, because for me, learning is life! Moreover, after returning to the US, I have worked for nearly 2 years as an ELL instructor with over 2000 hours of classroom instruction.

I understand what it's like to get frustrated with math - I struggled and nearly quit after receiving the worst marks of my entire life in high school Algebra II / Trig, barely receiving a D. But I also know what it takes to break down the process and stay motivated through that frustration to come to an understanding of it. I re-mastered math and received high A grades in both levels of college algebra! I went on to have an amazing 3 year track record of successful math tutoring at my university. Because I approach math from outside the field, I have a unique perspective on how I approach the subject and I've been told I can explain it better than a lot of math teachers! I also use the 4-way method (graphical, verbal, algebraic, and numeric) and focus on solving problems together, focusing at least 80% on you - not me - talking and doing! My coaching philosophy is "I do, we do, you do!"

If you're looking for affordable sessions where you will become empowered to take control of your own learning and break into the stratosphere of understanding, contact me and let's set up your first coaching session! The power is yours, and I'm here to help you tap into it!

In addition to my Bachelor of Arts in English and Linguistics from Indiana University, I also received undergraduate certification in TESOL. From 2014-2017 I worked in Japan as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) for EFL. I learned a lot in my role as an ALT and am currently working for an international school in the US teaching English for Special Purposes. So if you need ESL/EFL/ESP support, I can help!

With a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Linguistics from Indiana University, I have a wide range of knowledge regarding the English language and its literary content. From Beowulf to Harry Potter, I have had the pleasure to study some of the best literature from every historical period in which the English language has existed, as well as many classics translated into English from other languages. I also have several years of experience tutoring at my university's writing center, and I am connected to many local writers, and an aspiring author in my own right.

Japanese

With 2 years of University study of Japanese language, an international studies certificate focused on Japanese literature and culture, and 3 years living and working in Japan, I can help you get conversational with Japanese. If you're working with a Japanese business and need to become more culturally sensitive to Japanese co-workers or clients, or if you intend to visit Japan, I can help you pass the JLPT N5 or N4 and start your journey to mastering the Japanese language.

I know what it means to struggle with difficult to grasp concepts in algebra 1 and trig. I had a hard time in high school my junior/senior year, but when I returned to college in 2010 I was able to dedicate all my energy into getting it! Rising to the top with A's in both college Algebra I and II, I spent 3 years tutoring college math and leading a supplemental instruction group at my university. If you need help understanding the basic theory and practical problem solving required to get through your current classes or to prepare for entrance exams and college level algebra, I can help!

Chess,

Chess

I have studied and played the game of chess for 30+ years, started a chess club at my middle school, and maintain strong ratings (1200+ blitz, 1400+ rapid, 1600+standard) online at chess.com and other similar chess sites. I have access to a wealth of learning resources such as e-books and video lectures to draw from. I can help any beginner go from no knowledge of the game to playing chess at a club level in a relatively short time, so give it a try!
Martial Arts

Martial Arts

During my 3 years living and working in Japan, I trained in a JKF recognized Goju-ryu Karate-do dojo run by Master Ikeda, a master that was well-respected throughout Chiba Prefecture. I was granted the rank of shodan (first degree black belt) by Master Ikeda and can thereby offer supplemental karate instruction under other masters of the art. So if you're looking for a training coach to get started learning the basics of karate, or need an assistant coach for a karate club, contact me!
