I’m a professional educator, writer, and lifelong learner with over a decade of teaching experience in the U.S. and abroad. I hold a Master’s in English and have taught all levels of first-year college composition at Purdue University Fort Wayne as well as research writing, conversation skills, grammar, vocabulary, and phonetics both at home and abroad. My expertise covers English reading, writing, and ESL, with a special focus on helping students develop clarity, confidence, and adaptability in their communication skills.

As a former JET Program participant, I spent three years teaching in Japan, developing curriculum, and leading cultural exchange activities. Along the way and well into my 30s, I earned a black belt in Goju-Ryu karate — proof that discipline and persistence can be applied both inside and outside the classroom. I’ve also worked extensively in theater as an actor and behind the scenes, and I'm a published poet, all of which gives me a unique edge in coaching public speaking, presentation skills, and creative expression. I am also well-versed in teaching visual rhetoric and literary criticism/critical reading skills.

My approach blends clear, structured instruction with engaging, real-world application. Whether you need to polish an essay, master English grammar, prepare for a standardized test, or communicate effectively in a second language, I’ll meet you where you are and help you achieve your goals. I’m especially skilled at breaking down complex ideas into accessible steps, boosting confidence while building lasting skills.

I believe learning should be a conversation — not a lecture. My students often tell me I make even challenging topics approachable and rewarding. If you want a tutor who brings both professional expertise and genuine enthusiasm to every session, I’d be glad to help you succeed.

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

As a seasoned writing and English instructor, I know how to demystify the grammar, punctuation, and rhetorical skills tested on the ACT English section. I focus on practical strategies, clear rule explanations, and timed practice to help students quickly spot and correct errors. My students don’t just memorize rules — they learn how to apply them with confidence under exam conditions, boosting both accuracy and speed.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

I teach students how to approach ACT Reading passages strategically — identifying key ideas, making inferences, and finding the most efficient path to the right answer. My method emphasizes active reading, question-type recognition, and time management, so you can improve both accuracy and speed.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing

Writing, at its core, is an art. In academic essays, we often discuss the "poetics" for instance as a means to gauge readability and flow of ideas. Understanding and practicing artistic tools such as rhythm, meter, rhyme, alliteration, and various forms of sybolism such as metaphor, simile, synecdoche, etc., are essential to good writing, whether fiction or nonfiction, academic or personal, even highly technical writing. Having studied under two Poet Laureates of Indiana and being a published poet myself, I can help find points of entry to make your stories resonate or just to find a way to take interest in the artistic element of written communication to improve essays and other kinds of writing by utilizing the strategies of creative nonfiction and fiction writing.
English

English

I’ve taught English at the college level and abroad, helping learners strengthen reading comprehension, expand vocabulary, and communicate with confidence. My approach combines clear explanations with real-world examples, making grammar, analysis, and interpretation feel accessible and engaging. Whether you’re studying literature, improving everyday communication, or refining academic skills, I’ll help you understand the “why” behind the language so you can use it effectively.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

With years of experience teaching English in both the U.S. and Japan, I specialize in helping learners improve speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in ways that feel practical and enjoyable. I tailor each lesson to a student’s goals — from everyday conversation to academic and professional communication — while focusing on building confidence and cultural understanding. My background in theater and public speaking also helps me coach pronunciation, tone, and fluency so students can express themselves clearly and naturally.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

At ELS Language Services, I taught college-prep research writing every other semester for nearly a year. Afterwards, I applied these skills to teaching first-year writing at university level as a graduate teaching assistant for 2 year while getting my Master's and then for another nearly 3 years following. My approach to essay writing focuses on basic rhetorical concepts to understand essays as responses to larger conversations, while also grounding them in the structural conventions expected by the discourse communities for which they are intended. Writing is a series of processes, and I focus on student-oriented discussions and asking a lot of questions rather than providing "correct/incorrect" feedback to make writing essays engaging and personally rewarding.
Grammar

Grammar

I’ve taught grammar at the college level and to English learners of all backgrounds, focusing on making rules clear, logical, and easy to apply. My lessons combine targeted practice with real-world examples, helping students not only avoid mistakes but also write and speak with precision. Whether you’re preparing for a test, improving essays, or refining professional communication, I’ll help you master the details that make your English shine.
Literature

Literature

As a published poet trained in literary analysis by a former Indiana Poet Laureate, I bring both academic expertise and creative insight to literature tutoring. I help students move beyond summary to develop sharp, thoughtful interpretations grounded in textual evidence and historical or cultural context. Whether you’re studying classic works, contemporary fiction, or poetry, I’ll guide you in analyzing form, theme, and language so you can write and speak about literature with clarity and confidence.
Phonics

Phonics

Drawing on my background in both language instruction and theater, I teach phonics in a way that’s engaging, memorable, and confidence-building. My experience working with English Language Learners has taught me how to make pronunciation, intonation, and sound patterns clear and approachable. Through a mix of targeted drills, vocal exercises, and real conversational practice, I help students hear, produce, and remember the sounds that make English click.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

With over 20 years of acting experience, classroom education experience, and conference presentation experience, I think I know a few things about public speaking. I've presented regionally at TESOL and Writing Center conferences, as well as at workshops internationally. I can help with critiquing presentation content, design, flow, projection and vocal training, and more!
Reading

Reading

From classic literature to academic texts, I teach students how to read actively, analyze effectively, and retain information with confidence. My approach breaks down complex ideas into manageable steps, building both comprehension and critical thinking skills. Whether you’re tackling novels, essays, or informational passages, I’ll help you connect with the material and understand it deeply.
TOEFL

TOEFL

With years of experience teaching English to speakers of other languages, I specialize in preparing students for all sections of the TOEFL exam — reading, listening, speaking, and writing. I provide targeted strategies, timed practice, and feedback designed to boost both accuracy and fluency under test conditions. My lessons also focus on academic vocabulary, grammar precision, and clear pronunciation, helping you approach the TOEFL with confidence and skill.
Writing

Writing

I’m a university-level writing instructor (4+ years) with 10+ years of experience guiding students from all over the world through essays, research papers, and creative projects. At Purdue University Fort Wayne, I’ve taught first-year composition and advanced expository writing, emphasizing clarity, structure, and critical thinking. However, from writing center tutor to teaching at home and abroad, my background also includes developing curriculum, mentoring writers at all levels, and integrating real-world contexts to make writing skills practical and lasting. Whether you’re polishing grammar, strengthening your argument, or finding your voice, I know how to help you produce writing you can be proud of.
