As a college teacher for 30+ years, I have taught students ranging from the best-prepared to those needing remediation. I believe that everyone can learn - with the right motivation and skills. And that's where I come in.

In an effort to understand what techniques successful college students use to study effectively, I did systematic research with colleagues on the subject. We looked at reading, notetaking, and underlining techniques and what clues worked to help students achieve good grades. We published a half-dozen articles on the subject, one of which was selected as 1 of the 27 best articles on the subject over a 30-year period. I took the insights I had learned about successful active learning and put them into two editions of an innovative student study guide integrated into a best-selling college textbook, along with a teacher's manual and a test bank of over 2,200 original questions that incorporated diversity as well as multiple levels of Bloom's Taxonomy. Over the years I have worked closely with our student tutoring center to help students improve their test-taking ability.

I have extensive experience teaching students throughout the educational spectrum. I was a teacher of choice for Collegiate Connection students - high school students taking college courses on campus, but I also taught for over a dozen years in freshman learning communities of students needing remediation - who turned out to be significantly more successful than expected. I published research demonstrating that innovations to make my classes more accessible to nontraditional students in fact benefited all students. I have also taught courses for high school teachers on how to incorporate active learning into college-level courses. In recognition of this work, I have been invited to give over 70 presentations on diversity and student success. A dozen sets of my syllabi and course materials have been selected by my national professional organization as models of good pedagogy. I have published 10 professionally-refereed book chapte

Career Development

Career Development

Over 30+ years of teaching, I have advised dozens of undergraduate majors, minors, and graduate students on how to prepare for and market themselves for careers that fit with their needs and interests. I have also incorporated career information into all of my courses, showing the practical applicability of the subject matter. I taught Work and Organizations for a number of years, surveying the national and local labor markets and talking with recruiters and Human Resources professionals about what they looked for in job candidates. I have been invited to give a number of presentations on campus about career preparation.
College Counseling

College Counseling

Over the years I have advised dozens of undergraduate students, showing them how to integrate their general education courses into their major and create a useful and skillful product. That is, to get an education and not just a diploma. I helped get many of them into top graduate programs. I helped develop and I ran our graduate program in sociology for several years, reading dozens of application letters. I am sought out by students for my detailed, personalized letters of recommendation. I have worked closely with my advisees on how to prepare and market themselves for a fluid, shifting job market and rewarding – and perhaps multiple – careers. I have extensive experience teaching students throughout the educational spectrum. I was a teacher of choice for Collegiate Connection students – high school students taking college courses on campus, where I often got involved with advising them about their choice of college and application letters. I also taught for over a dozen years in freshman learning communities of students needing remediation – who turned out to be significantly more successful than expected, largely through intentional interventions and successful personal support. I published research demonstrating that innovations to make my classes more accessible to nontraditional students in fact benefited all students. I know what it takes to be successful in college and how to do it.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have taught at the college level for over 30 years, from large lectures to small seminars. I have won 16 teaching awards at the national, regional, state, and local levels. I was invited to give a national lecture that was broadcast on live TV to over 80 college campuses. I have given over 50 presentations at national and international professional conferences, as well as over 100 invited presentations and workshops to campus and community groups. Recently I auditioned for and was accepted to give a TED Talk. Further, I have professionally published articles on how to teach more effectively, including lecturing and use of PowerPoint.
Sociology

Sociology

I have taught college-level sociology for over 30 years, from introductory to graduate courses, including at least 25 different subject area courses. I have 10 book chapters on sociological pedagogy and was invited to author 2 editions of a student study guide bound into a best-selling sociology textbook. I also wrote the original test bank (over 2,200 questions at all levels of Bloom's Taxonomy) and instructor's manual. I have taught courses and given national and regional workshops for high school sociology teachers. I developed a module for high school sociology that was nationally distributed. I have received 16 awards for teaching sociology at the national, regional, state, and local levels. I have helped a number of my sociology undergraduate advisees to get into top graduate schools.
