I work with students of all ages: pre-school, K-12, college, and adult education. I also offer ACT test preparation and support for home schooling. I am an experienced tutor, teacher, and mentor with an aptitude for working with special needs students. I have a Ph.D. in Geography with specialties in historical geography, water resources, human-environment interactions, mountain geography, and the North American West. My experience includes tutoring in private and learning center settings, college teaching, classroom instruction, outdoor education, and teaching college courses online. Mentoring, supervising, and assisting students with individualized needs and projects is a forte.

My approach to tutoring emphasizes the student as an individual and as a learner with unique capacities, abilities, and interests (not just problems). Building on their strengths is the essence of the process, and helping them become enthusiastic about their studies and the learning process is the aim. Fostering a lifelong love of learning is what I seek to do.

ADHD

I hold a Ph.D. in geography from the University of British Columbia, a Master's in geography from the University of Colorado, and a B.A. in psychology from Colby College in Waterville, Maine. As a college professor I specialized in teaching special needs students, including learning disabled students and students diagnosed with ADD and ADHD, and worked closely with the disabled student services offices at all the places I taught. Working with special needs students is a particular interest of mine and and area of true strength.

Phonics

Phonics

For two years I worked at the Huntington Learning Center, where phonics was an integral part of learning center programs. Specifically, I gained experience using the "Explode the Code" phonics materials and the "Beyond the Code" reading materials with students of a wide variety of ages (5-17); I've also used the Sullivan Adult Reader series in association with phonics programs. Since leaving Huntington last June, I've continued to use these materials in my own private tutoring work, and use the "Explode the Code" diagnostic testing materials to place students within phonics and reading programs, and use them to identify specific issues they may have with phonics.
Sociology

Sociology

College education included over 18 credits in sociology, including courses on social stratification, the sociology of the family, small group sociology, and social theory. As a graduate student the study of social theory continued, this time in the context of social and geographical change and transformation.

Very patient and nice!

Cathy told a story to start the lesson and made sure my child was comfortable. She was very patient with my wiggly child and did not press him beyond limits. Much appreciated!

Got to know my son and to see what he needed help in. Gave him a Calendar to write down test and quizzes and things that need to be done. Was very nice and helpful

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Cathy is working with my college son who has ADHD. She is very knowledgeable and patient with him. She is teaching him strategies on improving his study skills as well as practical help in the classes. She is easy to talk to and communicates with me frequently on what she is working on with my son. I am pleased with her work.
