Hi! I’m Emily. I am an experienced science and math teacher, with specializations in elementary and middle school science education and interdisciplinary project-based learning. I am an environmental scientist by training, and this shows in my hands-on, arts-based, and nature inspired approach to teaching and learning. I absolutely love all things science and nature related, and my passion is helping students deepen their love for science and the world around them. Often students tell me that they didn’t know they loved science until we learned together! I take this as a high compliment!
I love tutoring because it allows me to really get to know each student and to create meaningful sessions tailored to their interests, goals, and challenges. We are able to share our passions and learn to make sense of the world together with focus and creativity. I especially love tutoring because learning can take place at the exact pace the student needs to succeed.
I use an emergent, student-centered approach to tutoring. When possible and desired, I can also create personalized project-based learning experiences. I teach through an ecological framework, which means that lessons are, as much as possible, hands-on, heart-forward, and nature-based. I am experienced with both standards-based learning as well as allowing for student interests to guide sessions.
I have a Doctorate in education (curriculum and instruction) and both a Master’s and Bachelor’s in Environmental Studies, as well as degrees in Spanish (BS) and Biology (minor). I have taught in various settings from outdoor wilderness camps to international classrooms for the last 15 years!
If you are interested in tutoring with me, please reach out. I like to do a free 15-20 minute consultation so we can determine if this is a good fit for both of us! I hope to hear from you. Don’t hesitate to contact me with additional questions or to schedule a consultation or session.
