Hi! I'm Jo Dean, someone who likes to sew. I create and sell mixed textile clothing and bags, and can teach you how to do the same. I love to draw my product ideas out in Adobe Illustrator and experiment with filling in scanned photos of my fabrics before I cut and sew. I use Photoshop and Illustrator to create motifs that become textile print designs I have printed on fabrics for my creations.

Adobe Illustrator is a core skill in today’s fashion and art industries, and I’ve used it extensively to create tech sketches, logos and packaging designs. I teach Illustrator from a creative viewpoint, while focusing on precision, consistency, and visual communication. My students learn to build clean resizable vector drawings. I will assist you to master Illustrator for class assignments and projects, and work assignments that are done professionally.

Adobe Photoshop

I teach Adobe Photoshop with a focus on fashion design applications, including textile/surface design, fashion illustration backgrounds, and presentation boards. I use Photoshop to digitally create hang tags and clothing labels. My teaching includes layers, filters, brush tools, and digital file setup geared toward fashion portfolios and industry-standard workflows. I’ll help you build confidence in using Photoshop creatively and professionally for your design projects.

I teach both expressive fashion illustration and the precise, technical drawing needed for tech packs and production. My background as a self-taught artist and later formal training at Purdue, Ball State, and FIT allows me to bridge creativity with accuracy. I help students build their visual vocabulary, explore media (digital and traditional), and draw the human form in motion, proportionally and with style. You’ll learn to create both conceptual fashion sketches and professional-grade technical drawings used by manufacturers.

As a fashion designer with years of hands-on experience, I teach sewing, draping, and patternmaking from both creative and technical perspectives. I’ve worked with industrial and home sewing machines, created patterns for ready-to-wear and custom designs, and taught these skills for over a decade at the Art Institute of Indianapolis. I specialize in helping students understand garment construction, body proportion, and fabric behavior—skills essential for creating well-made, wearable designs. My instruction is clear, supportive, and always tailored to your level and goals, whether you're just starting out or refining your technique.
