I rank among the top 2% of the 17,575 active tutors in 2019.

I am currently a tenured mathematics professor at a local university, and I have been at this institution since 2001. I have an undergraduate degree in mathematics and a Ph.D. in mathematics. I have been been tutoring mathematics in many situations since I was in high school. I have experience teaching and tutoring mathematics across the curriculum at the college/university, high school, and developmental levels. I also have several years of experience serving as a reader for Advanced Placement Calculus exams. I also have experience mentoring undergraduate research students in mathematics primarily in mathematical biology and low dimensional topology.

I tutor in all areas of mathematics and will gladly work to help students succeed in their mathematics studies and on their AP, ACT and SAT exams. I am eager to help my students succeed with their course work and develop study habits, strategies, and confidence that will help them beyond their current course content. Throughout my teaching and tutoring experience, I have worked with middle school, high school, college/university, and adult students.

I am able to tutor across the high school and college/university curricula, including algebra (all levels), geometry, precalculus, calculus (all parts of calculus), business calculus, calculus for the life sciences, trigonometry, ACT and SAT mathematics, discrete mathematics, linear algebra, abstract algebra, differential equations, real and complex analysis, modern geometry, differential geometry, topology, graph theory and combinatorics, probability and statistics, and mathematics content for elementary teachers. This includes course support and exam preparation for advanced placement (AP) Calculus AB, Calculus BC, and Statistics. I am currently writing a calculus for the life sciences textbook. For computational technology, I can help students with graphing calculators, computer algebra systems, and dynamic geometry software.

Approved Subjects

ACT Math

ACT Math

I am familiar and proficient with the mathematics content on the ACT exam. I have taught courses in elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, college algebra, trigonometry, and precalculus. I regularly teach a geometry course for future high school teachers. I also regularly teach calculus courses, which provides a broader, contextual viewpoint of how all of this this content in used in later mathematics courses. I am comfortable using graphing calculators in teaching and tutoring any of this content, and practice connecting algebraic (symbolic) approaches to visual (graphical) approaches to help deepen students' understanding.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have taught courses in college algebra, trigonometry, intermediate algebra, and elementary algebra. These courses are address the algebra and trigonometry content taught in high school. I am comfortable using graphing calculators in teaching and tutoring any of this content, and practice connecting algebraic (symbolic) approaches to visual (graphical) approaches to help deepen students' understanding.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have taught courses in college algebra, trigonometry, intermediate algebra, and elementary algebra. These courses are address the algebra and trigonometry content taught in high school. I am comfortable using graphing calculators in teaching and tutoring any of this content, and practice connecting algebraic (symbolic) approaches to visual (graphical) approaches to help deepen students' understanding. Additionally, I also teach and tutor undergraduate and graduate level algebra including linear algebra, group theory, ring theory, field theory, Galois theory, multilinear algebra, modules, homological algebra, and combinatorial group theory.
Calculus

Calculus

I teach calculus regularly, and I am in the process of writing a rigorous text for students in the life sciences. I have taught traditional calculus courses (for physics, engineering, and mathematics), calculus courses for life sciences, and business calculus. I have served as a Reader (grader) for the AP Calculus exams. I use graphing calculators, computer algebra systems, and online platforms as needed when teaching and tutoring calculus. Additionally, I teach and tutor more advanced related topics including real analysis, complex analysis, and topology.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I have tutored many students in differential equations and have taught courses with significant differential equations content. This includes ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, and Fourier series. I actively do research in mathematical biology, and the models in my work frequently rely on systems of differential equations.
Geometry

Geometry

I regularly teach a geometry course for future high school teachers and other mathematics majors and a geometry for future elementary school teachers. My Ph.D. research area is a very geometric area of mathematics. I comfortable with several dynamic geometry software packages including GeoGebra, The Geometer's Sketchpad, and Cinderella, and I do use these in teaching geometric content. Additionally, I teach and tutor in modern geometry, hyperbolic geometry, differential geometry, low-dimensional topology, algebraic topology, transformation groups, and complex analysis.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have taught courses in college algebra and trigonometry, which is the content of precalculus. I also regularly teach calculus courses, which provides a broader, contextual viewpoint of how this content in used in later mathematics courses. I am comfortable using graphing calculators in teaching and tutoring any of this content, and practice connecting algebraic (symbolic) approaches to visual (graphical) approaches to help deepen students' understanding.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I am familiar and proficient with the mathematics content on the SAT exam. I have taught courses in college algebra and trigonometry, which is the content of precalculus. I regularly teach a geometry course for future high school teachers. I also regularly teach calculus courses, which provides a broader, contextual viewpoint of how all of this this content in used in later mathematics courses. Statistics

Statistics

I have tutored many students in various statistics courses, including AP Statistics, college level statistics courses, and advanced college level probability and statistics courses. I am fluent in using TI graphing calculators for statistics, which is particularly helpful for AP Statistics.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I have recently taught trigonometry, and I regularly use trigonometry in teaching higher level mathematics courses and in my professional mathematical work. I use graphing calculators and other graphing software as needed in the teaching and tutoring of trigonometry.

Effective and Knowledgeable Tutor

I started working with Timothy in the middle of my first semester of Calculus 1 and worked with him through an entire second semester of Calculus 2. Timothy has made calculus so much easier. He is very good at simplifying complicated subjects and making them easier to grasp. He has many tips and tricks for solving problems using easier methods, making some of the more complex parts of calculus feel easy. Timothy is very flexible and willing to work with his students. Tutoring sessions are very tailored to the particular student's needs. I would 10/10 recommend working with Timothy to anyone wanting to make calculus easier or even looking to cultivate a better understanding of the subject matter.

So helpful and responsive

We value Timothy so much. Our son has so much more confidence in AP Stats since working with him. He reports Timothy is knowledgeable and helpful while also being “chill“.

An Expert in Complex Analysis

I am currently taking a first-semester graduate course in complex analysis, and Timothy has been able to answer every single question I’ve had on the spot. This has demonstrated to me that he is an expert in complex analysis. Additionally, Timothy helped me with real analysis, which contributed to my top-quartile performance on the second midterm. Furthermore, he identified key gaps in my mathematics Ph.D. applications that other professors had overlooked—an insight that reflects his expertise as a professor.
