As both of my undergraduate degrees are in the Humanities, I wrote constantly in college. I earned high achievement awards for both of my degrees and was asked to work as a writing advisor. I also took Honors English all throughout high school so I understand very well what is expected at that level and how to give students tools to improve their writing significantly.

I have experience teaching English in a Spanish high school in Spain and tutoring in a Chicago bilingual elementary school. I have worked as an in-home ESL tutor for native Burmese speakers, and I also served in an after-school ESL tutoring program for native Burmese and Arabic speakers (elementary school and middle school ages). In addition, I have experience as an in-home tutor for native Spanish speakers, both in preparation for official exams and for personal growth.

I grew up fascinated by language and have always excelled at reading and written expression. I was in gifted language arts and English courses throughout my school years, and became more acutely aware of grammar rules through my study of Spanish, ironically enough. I actually enjoy working on the technical aspects of language, and enjoy empowering students to be confident and accurate communicators in oral and written expression.

I was a voracious reader since a young age and believe very strongly in the power of story and written language to connect us. It is my experience that finding a student's interests and passions is the key to improving their reading and LA confidence. I love to work together with my students to find what drives them and get to be a guide as they make all kinds of discoveries about their own capabilities, and love of learning. As someone who had two BA degrees and an MA in the humanities, reading had been fundamental to my academic career and I feel confident working with learners of all levels, from elementary age to the university level.

I have studied Spanish for ten years, but more importantly, I have multiple immersion experiences that have taken the language off of paper and into real life. I believe that language learning can and should be fun and engaging, giving the learner real tools to communicate and not just memorize grammar. I graduated with my BA in Spanish and was awarded as the Outstanding Spanish Student. I am currently working on my MA in Spanish. As Spanish is my second language, I recognize and can help work through the difficulties of second language acquisition, particularly some of the difficulties English speakers get caught up in. I have had a large range of experience teaching Spanish to students of all different levels, goals, and abilities and love to help bring students to those lightbulb moments!

As someone who is continually studying and who had academically vigorous high school and university experiences, I have learned first-hand a lot of the most useful study skills, and those that are time-wasters. I was in the top of my class in high school and the valedictorian of my college class, and through a lot of practice, have learned well what allows students to study efficiently and effectively in order to have maximum academic success. During recent experiences teaching English in Spain, I've honed my skills in communicating useful tools and habits for recall and comprehension.

Writing

I have had a love for writing since I was a small child, and then constantly practiced that skill throughout my life, especially during my BA and MA degrees in the humanities. I have been praised many times for my written communication expertise and have tutored many students on a wide range of writing needs -from ESOL learners working on wording and particular vocabulary, to resume and portfolio building, to literary analysis, personal reflection, and applications to university. I am very patient and help draw out people's intended meaning and guide them to improve structure, style, and prose. Writing well opens up the world!
