My approach to teaching is to make the learning engaging and exciting. If students are just being drilled all day on how to learn a specific skill they will zone out/burn out and will be less likely to remember that skill. Using real world examples relating to the students' hobbies and culture helps students learn skills better and memory retention of that skill increases.
I have been a 6th grade math teacher for my 10 years, but I have helped create an accelerated pathway for mathematics in the school district I work in for K-8 students. I have used the curriculum for K-8 for mathematics and am aware of the the standards in all grades. Year after year I have seen growth in my classroom on state standardized testing from the beginning of the year to the end of the year while also seeing growth on End of Unit Assessments. Not only have I seen growth on testing, I have also seen growth on student participation due to my teaching style. As said before, the classroom should be engaging and exciting. By creating an engaging classroom environment students are more willing to participate, leading to enhanced learning and skill retention in the classroom.
