I have an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where I instructed college students in writing (rhetoric and composition) and creative writing (poetry). However, my journey as a writing tutor began long before that. I had the pleasure of working as a tutor at the renowned Kenyon College's Writing Center. Through Wyzant, I've helped students at the University of Dayton (UD) become better writers by proofreading their papers, showing them how to format their essays or coherently organize their thoughts, and helping them document their sources using MLA and APA style guidelines. Before tutoring students at UD, I worked with students at Sinclair Community College. I have significant experience in tutoring immigrants or English as a Second Language (ESL) students in writing. In addition, I have worked with two ESL students at UD on reading assignments.

Recently, a student told me that she nearly dropped one of her classes. She said another tutor told her that she was a bad writer and needed more help than he could give. After meeting with me, she felt more confident in her writing abilities. Days later she came to my office beaming and reported that she earned a 98% on her essay. The student was, in fact, not a bad writer. She merely needed encouragement and help with both formatting her essay and documenting her sources.

I currently tutor students in writing for all subjects. Although I have a twenty-four hour cancellation policy, I am willing to reschedule and make up sessions with students.

Finally, I am punctual and committed to your success in becoming a better writer. I hope to hear from you soon!

Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I'm a writing tutor, writer, and editor with 10 years of experience working in higher education. My tutoring journey began at Kenyon College where I tutored students at the Writing Center. Later, while earning my MFA in Creative Writing, I instructed college students in rhetoric and composition, as well as poetry. I also proofread trade journals for English professors and K–12 teachers for the National Council of Teachers of English, and so I consider myself a “writer’s writer.” I'm well versed in all aspects of writing, including grammar, spelling, diction, tone, and citation. Finally, my favorite style guide is the Chicago Manual of Style, but I also have experience utilizing the AP, APA, and MLA style guides.
English

English

In addition to tutoring graduate students at the University of Dayton in writing, I've worked with college students on English at Sinclair Community College. In addition, I was a high school English Teacher's Assistant at Stivers School for the Arts. Currently, as a graduate student, I teach a first-year writing course at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Finally, I attended Kenyon College, which is one of the premier colleges for English majors, and tutored students at the school's Writing Center.
Grammar

Grammar

As a writing tutor, I have always helped students ensure that their essays or academic papers are free of grammatical errors. Through reading out loud and repetition or practice, I help students learn grammar rules so that they can avoid future mistakes and become better writers. I am grammar-obsessed. If I cannot answer a question related to grammar, I will search for a solution until I find it.
Literature

Literature

I have experience in writing essays for standard, Advanced Placement and Honors high school English Literature classes. Stivers School for the Arts has used essays that I wrote for English Literature classes as samples for students. More recently, I have tutored students in English Literature at Sinclair Community College. I also took classes in African and African American Literature at Kenyon College. As a result of the aforementioned experiences, I can guide students in analyzing a vast array of literature: from Jane Austen to Ralph Ellison to Chinua Achebe.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Proofreading is the most basic level of assistance that I provide to students. As a writing tutor, I also help students become better at proofreading their own papers. I do this primarily through having students read their writing out loud. Once I have given students some basic tips, such as about grammar or citation rules, I expect them to begin correcting these mistakes. At first they will correct errors with some guidance from me. By the end of a tutoring session, however, I expect a student to catch many mistakes on his or her own. My goal is always to aid the student in becoming a better writer.
Reading

Reading

I believe that becoming a good reader is the first step in becoming a good writer. Currently, I tutor students in writing at Sinclair Community College. When I am tutoring a student, we refer back to his or her textbook, articles or other sources and practice active reading techniques. In a typical reading tutoring session, I would help a student find and highlight or underline the main ideas of a given text; write his or her reactions or questions in the margins; and use other strategies to organize his or her ideas before even beginning to outline an essay or academic paper.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

As a writing tutor, I encourage students to broaden their vocabularies. Strategies that I might employ for this purpose include introducing a student to a wider range of age-appropriate literature and playing vocabulary games with him or her. I believe that, in order to be a good writer, I must also consistently broaden my own vocabulary. As part of my own ongoing education, I use fun and engaging exercises or games to make learning new words easier.
Writing

Writing

Currently, as a graduate student in its English department, I teach a first-year college writing course at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. As an undergraduate student at Kenyon College, I tutored my peers at the school's Writing Center. In addition, I've tutored graduate students at the University of Dayton and college students at Sinclair Community College in writing for a variety of subjects, including English.
