Hi. My name is Jim. I have a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering from Marquette University and another bachelor degree in math from Illinois State University. I have also attended summer classes for 4 years that taught me how to include real life situations in math curriculum. These classes also showed me different methods to teach math topics so that all students are able to comprehend the topics.

I have been teaching for the last 20 years. Before that I worked as a mechanical engineer in the nuclear power industry. I have spent most of those 20 years teaching high school classes which have included Algebra 1 to AP Calculus AB and everything in between. As for on-line tutoring, I have been been doing it for over five years. On-line tutoring has helped me a lot in the classroom. It has shown me the different ways students learn, and led me to different ways to teach topics based on students' learning styles.

In the classroom and when tutoring, I ask a lot of questions when I am helping students solve problems. This way they are more involved in the process, and I can see where they are struggling. This teaching strategy helps the student understand the process being used to solve a problem and gets them to use past math knowledge. I get a great deal of satisfaction when a student has that light bulb go off, and they understand the reasoning used to solve a problem. I feel it is important for students to understand the reasoning that goes into the steps used to solve a problem as it it is to just do the steps because that is the method that needs to be used.

excellent and reliable

James has really helped my son. He feels confident asking questions and James explains in a way that my son understands. Not to mention- James is patient and understanding with parents and scheduling needs as well!

Changed everything!

After an entire year of struggling through Math, and waiting for nearly six months on waitlists for in-person tutors, I finally broke down and jumped on Wyzant. I'm so glad I did. James was punctual, patient, a "math genius" (according to my daughter), and a fantastic teacher. My daughter sees triangles in a whole new light ;-) Thank you, James!!

Knowledgeable, patient and courteous. Able to assist on short notice, too.

According to my son, James offered helpful guidance on how to approach problem solving that was much easier to understand than his own teacher was able to communicate. We were very pleased and grateful for his help. Will ask him to tutor again in the future.
