I have a Master’s Degree in Social-Organizational and Quantitative Psychology from Illinois State University, where I was a University Fellowship Recipient. Prior to that, I graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University, where I studied Psychology, Music, and Religious Studies.
I have a passion for interdisciplinary studies and enjoy taking a wide variety of approaches to help students understand new concepts. I also have extensive training and experience working with and finding accommodations for neurodivergent students. I take great pride in helping students learn how to learn so that they feel competent in their own skills and confident trying new things.
I have been tutoring/teaching in some capacity for over 20 years. I tutored middle school and high school students for four years (all subjects). I worked as a teaching assistant and private tutor for undergraduate Psychology students for five years. I have taught music one-on-one to students of all age levels for over ten years, and I currently homeschool my own gifted children in all general education courses. My teaching style follows the Gradual Release of Responsibility Framework: I teach/demonstrate the skill; then the student and I practice together; then I observe the student while they lead; only after these steps are completed is the student fully able to work independently. Because most subjects require cumulative knowledge acquisition, we begin by assessing where the student's level currently is and work to build from there, with a strong emphasis on foundational concepts.
My areas of specialization include: writing skills; study strategies and test prep; mathematics and statistics up to college level; psychology, including both methods and content areas; music, with emphasis on music theory, ear training, general music education, and flute/woodwind playing; and general education K-12.
