I am a certified German teacher who would like to share my passion for the German language and culture with you! I use the immersion method and focus on what you are able to do with German at the end of our lessons. We will focus on vocabulary building, proper sentence structure and communication in the four skills of speaking, writing, listening and reading. Culture is integrated throughout the lessons, so that one can gain a better understanding of the similarities and differences of the German-speaking world and the United States. I hold a B.A in German, two graduate degrees in education, and I have 14 years' experience teaching children, young adults and adults. I was very fortunate to realize my dream to live and work in Germany for five years, where I ultimately gained fluency and expertise in the German language and culture via a first-hand immersion experience.
So whether you do business with Germany, Austria or Switzerland, are traveling to the German-speaking world for pleasure, need some additional instruction time and practice, or would just like to learn a new and exciting subject which broadens your global horizons, come learn about the German language and culture with me!
Translation services and speech coaching also available upon request. Bis dann!
I hope to hear from you soon!

Julie is a talented tutor with years of practical knowledge from her time living in Germany. She not only skillfully teaches the language but gives insight into the culture and protocol. She has exceeded my expectations and I am becoming more fluent with each lesson. I highly recommend choosing her. Danke.
Thanks Julie for helping me with my German in preparation for my trip to Germany! I feel so much more confident in my speaking skills. Excellent experience!
Julie has been working with our daughter weekly for 10 months. She's very knowledgeable about the German language and culture. But that's not all! Julie is always cheerful, organized, prompt, and flexible. Her lessons are wonderfully relevant and specific for our daughter's needs. Working with Julie has been a pure joy for us. As our daughter heads off to live in Germany for a few months I will miss her, and I will also miss Julie's weekly visits.
I must say that my daughter has had nothing but good things to say about Julie and she is very enthusiastic about German thanks to Julie. Julie always seems to have a fun activity and my daughter is amazed at how much she is learning and how useful it will be. Business wise every thing has been top notch as well.
Julie continues to motivate and educate our daughter (now a Senior in H.S.). My normally reticent daughter goes to the effort of telling us the neat things Julie comes up with to make the class interesting and has a genuinely good time. For example, today Julie used her ever present laptop to go out looking for apartments in Berlin and Munich to do some real world learning. Outstanding!
Julie has the rare teaching ability to let students (me) ask questions in English as well as German. As a result, I have not had to deal with the frustration of having to speak, question or converse and stop in frustration when I stumble over one word. I have appreciated her instant corrections as we converse and her willingness to stop and talk in some detail about grammatical topics, an area where I am the weakest.
Julie translated a speech for me, which I had reviewed by our managers in Germany, and she got an A+++! She also helped me with my pronunciation and was terrific.
Julie has been working with our 12 year old daughter for less than 6 months, and the progress we have seen in that time has been amazing. After three years of weekly lessons at an organized "German School", our daughter showed little comfort or knowledge of German, so we decided that private tutoring was a better option. Julie teaches German with full immersion - we may not know what she is saying, but we hear our daughter speaking more confidently, and more importantly, she seems to have fun. Today we received our daughter's test results from the National German Test, and after never scoring better than the 60th percentile, this year she scored at the 95th percentile, and we feel it is all thanks to Julie.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Emphasis on the four communication skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing via the immersion method with grammatical structures, vocabulary building and pronunciation integrated throughout.
I have an interest in teaching phonics and am qualified to do so because of my background in second language teaching and my Master's degree in Literacy from the University of New England. I own many materials for teaching phonics, such as Hooked on Phonics Kindergarten, First and Second grade and a large collection of graded readers, and I am familiar with many websites that help teach phonics, phonemic awareness and the like.
