About Emily

Bio

Hi! I’m Emily, and have been tutoring students for more than 16 years. I began as a peer tutor, teaching music theory, sheet and sight reading, and clarinet to 5th graders. I love starting each first session by letting students show me what they’re working on and hearing what they’d like help with. From there, I create a personalized plan to build their confidence and skills. When it comes to music, there are three basics I always include: breath work, scales, and sight reading. <— There...

<— There is no such thing as too much practice when it comes to these three basic! After a few years of music tutoring, I began helping students in Algebra I & II, Geometry, and Trigonometry. I use the same caring, step-by-step approach for math as I do for music. (Sometimes even using music to help remember tricky math equations — catchy little tunes can make formulas stick!) A little about me: I love hiking with my dog! Last year I hiked over 46 miles on the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. He didn’t come on that one, but he joins me on plenty of local trails. I also enjoy traveling and have a goal to visit all seven continents. If you’re looking for a patient, creative tutor who will meet you or your child where they are and help them grow, I’d love to work with you!

Clarinet

Clarinet

Started playing clarinet at the age of 11, followed by 8 consistent years of playing in concert, jazz, marching band, solo, ensemble, and competitions. I drew back on playing once entering college to only taking private lessons. And since then, have chosen to just continue play for myself. As for tutoring, I taught lessons/private tutoring for 5 consecutive years. Followed by a random lesson here and there since.
General Music

General Music

I first started learning music theory at 8 years old and continued lessons for over 10 years. My first instrument was the piano, followed by xylophone, recorder, clarinet, saxophone, and oboe (in that order). I have tutoring experience in general music/music theory for students just interested in learning music and a vast majority of beginner level musicians.
