Hello aspiring graphic designers and Photoshop users! My name is Barry and I am a graphic designer with seventeen years of professional experience. I studied visual communications at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, learning from top industry talent. My education instilled in me that it is not the power of your computer or the latest version of your software that makes a good designer. Instead, a good designer knows how to organize images, shapes, colors and type in visually pleasing ways by adhering to basic principals and techniques.
My professional design experience includes work at renowned marketing agencies, education and research institutions and freelance work for a range of corporate, retail and education clients. I have worked in higher education for fifteen years, mentoring junior talent and passing on my knowledge of how to create impactful visual communications. I also have volunteer experience tutoring high school age students. My approach to tutoring first involves looking at any existing design work to gauge the student's level of experience. From there, I assign a project based on a real world design task and work through the project with the student to get a sense of their methods. I will then walk the student through their strengths and areas of improvement and assign a project for them to complete on their own. Future sessions will review work, walk through any edits and educate the student on why such edits are made. I am also open to crafting lesson plans for students based on areas they wish to expand their experience in.
I am also open to tutoring the basics of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign and believe the best method of teaching these programs involves an approach similar to how I tutor in the fundamentals of graphic design. I like to craft working sessions and assignments to elements of the program that I or the student feels is in need of exploration.
I hope you consider me as a teacher for graphic design or Adobe programs!
