Thank you for your interest. What makes me qualified to tutor your child? My story is a personal one. I have a child with dyslexia. I am a parent that understands your child’s frustration with reading difficulty. I have experienced the added stress this brings into the home and how this impacts a child’s self-esteem.
I tutor students with and without dyslexia. I am a certified Orton-Gillingham reading specialist and a CALP (Academic Language Practitioner) certified through ALTA. I earned my Orton-Gillingham certification through the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Metropolitan Chicago Scottish Rite, an IMSLEC- and IDA-accredited program. This 15-month master’s-level program included 100 hours of supervised tutoring, 45 hours of classroom instruction, and rigorous training standards.
Orton Gillingham uses Structured Literacy, this is research backed, explicit approach focusing on systematic phonics and decoding. Schools teach Balanced Literacy which is more implicit, “little bit of everything” approach that of at often emphasizes literature exposure and used “balanced literacy” strategies like picture cues and guess unknown words.
MSLE (multi-sensory language education) is the foundation of the OG approach. Current research has proven that MSLE changes the way the brain functions. Multi-sensory uses all senses, including auditory, visual, kinesthetic, and tactile. I incorporate Structured Word Inquiry (SWI) into my lessons. I have experience with Wilson, Barton, SPIRE and Take Flight OG Programs. My goal is to increase your child’s self-esteem and empower the way your child learns. Learning should be rewarding, not painful trying to learn. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. References available upon request.
