Hi, I'm Elka! I am a huge lover of languages, different cultures, travel and food! I have taught Spanish at many different levels for a total of 15+ years. Most of my teaching experience is at the college and high school levels. I am an excellent teacher of basic grammar, if that is what you struggle with (i.e. if you are having nightmares about the preterit versus the imperfect or the subjunctive... I've got you!). I am also well trained in the communicative approach of Spanish language teaching, and prefer to speak Spanish during lessons as much as possible.
I discovered my love of Spanish early in life, and discovered my love for linguistics while studying abroad in Spain during my junior year of college at Indiana University. I went on to graduate from IU with my BA in Spanish. I then received my Master's degree in Hispanic linguistics from the University of New Mexico, and then my PhD in Hispanic linguistics from the University of Pittsburgh.
While most of my teaching experience is in the classroom context, I am very effective one on one and in many ways prefer this format. I'm happy to teach all ages and have experience with all ages. I am very aware of how difficult a foreign language can be for students and that different students learn languages in different ways; I do my best to jump in at whatever level my student is at and meet them there!
