I'm a mom of two teen boys and love to home tutor them in just about every subject as they've grown. I've been a Sign Language Interpreter since 2007 and a tutor on Wyzant's platform and in person for several years, and thoroughly love my work. I have tutored children, kids, young adults, adults, and interpreting students in the use of American Sign Language.

Avidly reading, exploring the intricacies of English grammar, and worldly studies are my hobbies. I've lived in several US states as well as in Naples, Italy and have studied multiple European languages.

I've been reading at a collegiate level since the 4th Grade, was an ace in AP English in high school, and partially completed a BA in English before beginning my career in interpreting. Being an ASL interpreter requires a high competency in both English and ASL, as it's part of our credentialing and every day working processes. I've lived in and visited several European countries and studied their languages as well. I'm fluent in American Sign Language. While I'm not fluent in other foreign languages, my studies have given me a basic structural and conversational understanding of them.

I've been interpreting both in the community (medical, legal, business, etc) and educational (K-1, post-secondary, graduate, and doctorate) settings for 15+ years. I have been working with an Advanced level certification for the majority of that time.

Before becoming an interpreter, I was a vocalist from age 5 until 21 with many years of vocal training in the private arena as well as in college.

I'm happy to share my knowledge with others and love to see what true comprehension of a subject can result in. I love to make learning fun and encourage a lot of questions!

Exceptional Sign Language Tutor

⭐️⭐⭐⭐⭐ After a few years away from studying sign language, I decided to get back into it and booked sessions with Katy. Wow, what an amazing decision! Katy has years of interpreting experience, and it absolutely shows in her teaching style. Our lessons breeze by because she's so knowledgeable - not just about the language itself, but about Deaf culture as well. This cultural context makes the learning experience so much richer and more meaningful. She perfectly balanced refreshing my rusty skills while introducing new concepts. Her patience and expertise made getting back into sign language much less intimidating than I expected. If you're looking for a sign language tutor who brings real-world experience and cultural knowledge to your lessons, I can't recommend Katy highly enough!

Very helpful and knowledgeable!

Katy helped me draft up and practice for an ASL presentation. I wasn’t very confidant in my ASL abilities but she helped me find that confidence through practice and I ended up getting 100% on the presentation. Very fast response times. I would recommend her to anyone who needs help with ASL!

Easy to interact with and helpful

I've only had one session so far, but Katy was extremely easy to talk to and very obviously organized and knowledgeable about how to teach ASL. She has a great demeanor that made the session fun and I'm already learning from her. Looking forward to future sessions!

Knowledgeable and professional

Katy has been great at not only helping me learn ASL, but also teaching me about Deaf culture to give me a further grasp of the language. She has been monumental in assisting me with furthering my knowledge for my career and my own personal interest. Katy focuses on content areas I would like to focus on and also helps me build on those areas. I would highly recommend Katy as a tutor for anyone.

Knowledgeable & patient tutor

She did a great evaluation of where I was at, made suggestions of where to start and gave me “homework”. :) I am gonna love continuing to learn with her. She has mapped out a plan and talked it over with me. She wants to know where we are coming from - our background, why we want to learn and what we see doing with it. It isn't about a cookie cutter lesson plan, it is all about us.

So helpful

Katy gives me great ideas to build on what I know and what I need to learn. My biggest issue is using classifieds and after only a couple sessions, I feel like I have made improvements. I feel that she is invested in my learning. She is kind and knowledgeable!
