I have been teaching and tutoring internationally for more than a decade, and obtained teaching certification through ACSI. After obtaining a Master's of Divinity, I served as a missionary, teaching both local and foreign populations in Math, History, and Bible. After returning to the States I pursued a second Master's degree in Library and Information Science and now work as a reference librarian in addition to my tutoring. Having taught a wide range of students from many different backgrounds, I am able to meet students at the level where they are at. By seeing how difficult problems can be broken down into smaller steps, my students have been able to gain understanding and confidence in preparing their homework and for tests in the classroom. I enjoy tutoring because we are able to focus on individual needs without outside distractions.

Approved Subjects

ACT Math

ACT Math

I have taught and tutored in math for the past five years while teaching internationally. I have worked with students ranging from elementary through seniors taking calculus. I will work on test taking strategies as well as understanding the steps needed for solving individual problems.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I began teaching Algebra I several years ago to both junior high and high school students. Since that time I have taught additional math classes that extended through Calculus as well as tutored math students at several different levels including Algebra I.
American History

American History

I have taught US History and AP US History for several years and have helped my AP students achieve over an 85% pass rate on the AP test. The focus I give in history is seeing the overall picture that unfolds at that time and then to see how individual people and events are part of that picture. Seeing how everything connects makes learning each part significantly easier.
Bible Studies

Bible Studies

I studied for a Masters of Divinity at Fuller Seminary in California. Afterwards I have seven years of teaching experience with Bible as my primary subject. For five of those years I was the sole Bible teacher for the junior high and high school. In addition, I have worked leading Bible studies at a number of Christian camps where I worked as a counselor and coordinator.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have spent years teaching and tutoring math I have worked with students ranging in grade from elementary to high school. With elementary I aim to make math as fun an interesting as possible so that the learning process is enjoyable.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I have taught and tutored ESL throughout the seven years that I spent living abroad. I have taught English at a beginning level, advanced level, and helped teachers prepare for the TOEFL exam. I have primarily worked with students (both adults and children) who have Spanish as their native language.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have taught and tutored in math for several years in subjects ranging from elementary to calculus. Pre algebra helps establish the skills and concepts that are foundational for all subsequent classes so having the strong base is very important. In tutoring sessions the focus is not just on how it works, but why it works and why it is important.
Reading

Reading

As part of the classes I have taught there has always been a large focus on reading and comprehension. We worked on reading techniques to improve students ability to remember and analyze the material, as well as explain it to somebody else in their own words. Even non English classes that I taught routinely had vocabulary words and reading quizzes. Additionally I have tutored in reading at the elementary level during my time teaching.
Religion

Religion

My undergrad major was in religion. Additionally, I attended seminary and have an M.Div. Beyond that I have taught Bible classes, as well as world religions courses, for 7 years.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have taught and tutored math internationally for the past five years. These classes have ranged from elementary math through Calculus. When tutoring I have worked with students ranging from preparing for a single exam to having sessions four times per week depending on the needs of the student.
Spanish

Spanish

During college I received a minor in Spanish. I spent one semester during college living with a Mexican family while participating in a study abroad program. After finishing school I spent the next seven years living in Mexico and Nicaragua where I worked as a teacher. Some of my best friends are native Spanish speakers who do not speak any English.
Study Skills

Study Skills

While teaching in Mexico I incorporated study skills and note taking into my classes. Sensing more was needed, I taught a short elective on study skills, note taking, and organization. I have worked with special needs students to make sure they are using their agendas, and help them find a way to organize a material so that they can succeed. Additionally I have tutored in elementary and have focused on organizational skills.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

In the past I have tutored in vocabulary and spelling. In most of my classes I have incorporated vocabulary to help in reading and comprehension. Bible and History classes have frequent vocabulary quizzes. By seeing words in everyday reading and conversation it shows their importance and gives a chance to learn words and put them into practice.
World History

World History

Having taught World History it is fun to see how different civilizations develop over time. When teaching history I focus on getting the overall picture first, and then filling in details about people and events to see how they help make up the entire history of that time period. Looking at the big picture first makes all the other information easier to understand and remember.
