I have been tutoring all kinds of students strictly in mathematics for over 30 years in the North Shore of Chicago. I started as a student tutor in high school (in the North Shore) and enjoyed helping fellow students overcome the anxiety of struggling with math. In college I majored in pure math (not applied math) and received my undergraduate degree from Northwestern University (Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences). While I was deciding if I should pursue a teaching certificate, I received a demand for private tutoring and went in that direction. I strongly believe that one-on-one teaching is the most effective form of learning.
For over thirty years, I have worked with students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds from public schools to private schools. I treat everyone equally and know that one approach may not work for all students. I slow things down and use repetition for students who need more time to process the information. On the flip side, I can speed things up for those students who grasp concepts quickly. Regardless, there is usually more than one way to solve a problem. My experience comes from working with students of all levels and from many different school districts. I feel that patience is the most important part of tutoring.
The pandemic has had a very detrimental effect on students' understanding of math, in particular. Math is a ladder that cannot have missing rungs, and I believe the pandemic removed some rungs. This ladder can be repaired with one-on-one tutoring. I am available to help students climb this ladder and hopefully reach the top.
