I earned my B.S. in Physics from Illinois State University, with a minor in Mathematics. Afterward, I attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I earned my M.S. in Physics, as well as another M.S. in Agronomy (studying the evolution of herbicide resistance in weeds). I then attended Penn State University, where I earned my Ph.D. in Physics.

After my Ph.D., I taught as a physics professor at Earlham College for one year, and then as a physics professor at Kansas Wesleyan University for five years. Besides physics, I have taught many math courses (from College Algebra through Discrete Math) and computer science courses (Introduction to Data Science, Introduction to Python Programming, and Advanced Python Programming).

My teaching style involves asking questions to figure out exactly where you're at in terms of understanding a concept, and then to use as many common-sense, real-life examples as needed to get you to where you want to be. I love teaching, and tutoring is my favorite way of teaching (as opposed to standing in front of a classroom), because I can tailor my methods to whatever will work best for the particular student I am helping.

I've primarily tutored college students, but also some high school students, but I'm open to teaching math, physics, and/or computer science subjects at any level. As a college professor, most of my teaching experience comes from a classroom setting, but, as I mentioned earlier, my preference is one-on-one tutoring. While working as a professor, I strongly encouraged students to attend my office hours for extra help, and I had some of the best-attended office hours on campus because of my passion for helping students succeed. I would love to help you too!

Amazing college calculus and physics tutor!

Mike has been meeting with my college freshman for weeks to help them get and stay on track for the calc and physics classes they failed last term. Mike has restored their confidence, and my freshman says they actually enjoy lessons with him! Mike is very responsive, proactive, and seems to be just a genuinely warm and kind person. He is not only brilliant enough to have a PhD in physics but also knows how to teach calc and physics to struggling students. I asked him to keep me updated as an anxious parent on how he thinks it’s going, and he’s been great about doing so. I’m almost reluctant to write such a glowing review for fear his schedule will fill up and he’ll raise his rates, but honestly, Mike deserves it. My college freshman and I could not be happier or more grateful for him.

Great tutor

Michael gave great explanations and lots of examples and illustrations for a comprehensive understanding of circular motion. He's also very flexible in meeting the student where they're at.

a great tutor

Micheal helped me with my math in algebra 2 and because of him I'm able to understand the subject way better now. He also taught me new ways of of doing equations I never knew before.

G8 honors calc 1 high school tutor

G8 teacher! 5 star. Had my son work equations while he also worked equation. Then he explained the logic of which step he went wrong. The teaher explained concepts to make sure he understood.

One of the best Physics tutors ever!

I had AP Physics C: Mechanics and AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism. Not only did he go over the problems and explain any area of confusion with perfect sense, but he also answered and explained different areas of Physics that all connected. I can proudly say after all of my sessions that he has made Physics more clear and real-world than ever before. He's always fun and engaging to talk to as well. Thank you so much for everything, Mr. Michael, and I wish you well :)

BEST TUTOR!

I can't recommend Mike enough! He went above and beyond to help me with my Physics worksheets. Before our sessions, he took the time to go through the entire worksheet on his own, which saved us so much time and made our meetings super productive. What really stood out was how Mike explained physics concepts in a way that made sense. He didn't just help me with the questions, but he also gave me a solid conceptual understanding, which made everything click. That was a game-changer for me. Mike is by far the best tutor I've worked with. His dedication, preparation, and teaching style really made a difference in my studies. If you're looking for a knowledgeable and committed tutor, Mike is your guy. Thanks so much, Mike!

Very reliable and flexible!

I was an Algebra 2 student of Mr. B, and I went from understanding next to nothing about the subject, to consistently aceing my tests! Whenever questions have unexpected twists or unusual factors, Mr. B always makes an effort to figure it out alongside me despite how difficult it may seem. If you’re looking for a tutor who exercises patience and understanding for those who have difficulty learning certain topics, I would highly recommend Mr. B!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!!!!

I haven't taken Physics 1, calc 1, or calc 2 in YEARS, and I had to take Physics 2 for my last semester to graduate. Michael is highly knowledgeable and was extremely patient with me. He helped me go over things I should know in Physics 2, like Newton's laws and how they relate to electric fields and electrons. He also helped me review integrals, derivatives, and antiderivatives because I 100% forgot how to do them. For Physics 2, he helped me get ahead of the lessons so that when class started, I could understand it since the professor would go over everything too quickly. Overall, I highly recommend Michael as a tutor. Thank you so much, Michael!!!!
