About Al

Bio

I retired as an Air Force Lt Col with lots of experience applying and teaching the physics I learned in college. I was an assistant professor of physics for 3 & 1/2 years at the Air Force Academy after flying on reconnaissance missions for 9 years just prior to that. I taught applied physics at the British Royal Air Force Test Pilot School for 2 years and then taught undergrad algebra-based and calculus-based physics at the Illinois Institute of Technology after my time in the USAF.

I have tutored for Wyzant for over 2 years. I am now in the top 20 of the most experienced physics tutors with a background check out of over 1300 physics tutors available through this platform. My approach is to guide the student toward the proper steps needed to answer either conceptual multiple-choice or free-response questions. First, I make sure you understand the main concepts. Then we will apply these concepts to HW problems. I clarify the way that equations can be used to solve the HW. There are often two ways to solve most of them. I try to show you the easiest and usually the quickest way to do that. I also focus on the formula sheet you will be using during the exams, should you be fortunate to have one. I try to get the student to do as much of the problem as possible until it is clear that they need assistance. This is called "active learning" in the pedagogical world and is normally the best way to learn the skills needed to excel on exams or HW assignments. I can also run through the entire problem-solving process for students who are a bit anxious about performing directly in front of an “expert.” For those behind in class, I can provide lecture style presentations. I also provide test-taking strategies and the results of some psychological studies of students' study prep and exam approaches.

Amazing help for AP Physics

Al was very friendly and helpful throughout our lessons. He helped me understand difficult material and helped me work through problems. I was able to get a 5 on AP Physics C: Mechanics and Electricity and Magnetism because of his help.

From 8 to 76 on AFOQT Qant.

I learned so much from Al in out first lesson alone. He had me feeling confident after day 1. Al really dials in on exactly what is and is not going to be on the afoqt and gets feedback from people who have recently taken the exam. This ensures your studies are the most efficient that they can be. I remember taking the test, which was my third and final try, and feeling very prepared. I felt like everything that I saw on the test, I had practiced with Al. And that was the difference. Nothing caught me off guard, nothing surprised me. All because of the great work from Al. Now I get to live out my dream of flying C17s in the Air Force! 10/10 would recommend! THANK YOU AL

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Al was great! There were some issues due to the time zone miscommunication but Al was very patient with me. Once we got on we jumped right into it. I haven’t done a math problem in over 10 years but Am broke things down where it refreshed my memory fairly quickly. He taught me multiple ways to approach a math problem to get the correct answer. I look forward to another tutoring session with Al

Fantastic physics teacher!

Al has helped my daughter all year with her physics. He is thoughtful, supportive, and has completely shifted her grade by helping her learn for each quiz, test, and project. She loves her lessons with him and feels so much more confident in her class. We will definitely use him for college physics too!

Great 1st session

Worked great with my son to help him prepare for an exam. My son walked away happy and would like to see him for more tutoring sessions in near future.

Erin, 2 lessons with Al

He really jumped in with immediate positive effect on my son

Al really came in at a pinch, and helped us in short order turn around my son's view of what he could accomplish. This is not a topic I can help provide support on personally, so I was happy to find Al was such a sound and patient subject matter expert.
