B.A. in English, M.Ed.in Editing, Writing, Grammar

As a high school AP English teacher, College Admission Ass. Director, University Writing Tutor, and PhD Editor, I've been responding to student writing for over 20 years. I approach tutoring with a pedagogy informed by an appreciation for each writer's voice while guiding them toward writing that is clear, concise, and polished.

Academic Writing: I collaborate with the student to establish the agenda and prioritize objectives. I ask clarifying questions, indicate issues, and model solutions tailored to the unique demands of each student and each task. My analysis of writing strengths and weaknesses helps students with the skill of revision, the key to improving their writing. Whether I am helping them with the first steps of idea generation or polishing the final draft of a dissertation, my students find their writing is more productive, strategic, deliberate, and graceful.

PhD Dissertations: My editing in all disciplines is designed to prepare the document for submission to professional journals. I offer 3 levels of editing, each using a multi-pass, multi-faceted process to ensure the document is correct, consistent, accurate, and complete and that the organization, visual design and the style of the document supports reader comprehension and use of the document.

SAT/AP Lang & Lit Exam Preparation: My students' mastery of both the content and test-taking strategies is achieved through specifically targeted lessons to address their weaknesses. I help them understand their mistakes in order to avoid making them again-- a key strategy for improving scores. My students find that they are less stressed and retain the new reading, grammar, and writing skills they've acquired.

College Application Essay Guidance: I meet one-on-one with students, helping them with brainstorming and choosing topics, style and structure, editing and revising. I also serve as a draft proofreader, offering written feedback to guide the student's revision process.

ACT English,

ACT English

My ACT English tutoring plan helps students develop a strong skill set to master the three parts of the English exam: Grammar, usage, and rhetoric, Reading, and Writing. I individualize the plan to meet each student’s goal for the ACT--whether it’s to improve grammar and usage, reading, writing, or all three. English Grammar and Usage: Students learn to quickly identify and correct errors in the grammar and usage conventions typically used on the exam. These conventions, which comprise 40 out of the 75 English questions, are: Punctuation: internal and end-of-sentence punctuation, with emphasis on the relationship of punctuation to meaning and avoiding ambiguity. Grammar and usage: agreement between subject & verb, pronoun & antecedent, and modifiers & the word modified; verbs and verbals; tense and aspect; and idiomatic usage Sentence Structures: compound and complex sentences, relationships between and among clauses, conjunctions, placement of modifiers, shifts in construction and focus, a Rhetoric: phrases, nominal structures, revising for clarity and conciseness Reading: Students learn ways to quickly analyze the four subject passages-- social studies, natural sciences, literature, and humanities— to identify the main idea, compare ideas, generalize ideas, identify relationships such as cause-and-effect, and define words based on context Writing: Students learn to use advanced rhetoric to write a unified, coherent essay that clearly states an insightful perspective on an issue and supports a nuanced, precise thesis. They learn to develop the significance of the issue in logical and organized paragraphs. Test-taking Strategies: Students learn to unpack each multiple-choice item and eliminate wrong answers. They learn to engage with the readings and pay close attention to questions. They learn strategies for when they are stuck on a question, word, or section of a passage. They learn the difference between reading, skimming, and scanning. And last, but certainly not least, they learn how to manage

I began my graduate studies in education with courses such as Reading and Learning Disabilities, Assessment and Diagnostic Teaching of Reading, Human Development and Reading, and Literacy for the Exceptional Child. As a high school English teacher, I was committed to improving the literacy challenges of my students who struggled with reading. While I’m a born reader, I wanted to understand how the brain learns to read and why decoding skills frustrated bright students. My strong background in graduate-level instruction in reading and my experience in teaching reading as a high school English teacher allow me to offer personalized reading instruction to any student. I help students write their best possible college application essays by guiding them through the steps of the writing task: understand the demands of the prompt, generate ideas at the pre-writing stage, elaborate and revise the rough draft, and proofread the final copy. Throughout the process, my students strengthen their ideas, spot weak rhetorical and organization choices and make appropriate ones, and correct grammar and other surface-level concerns. After working with me, students have developed a polished essay written in their own voice. The result is a more confident student and a personal essay that is immersive, thought-provoking, and natural-sounding. Knowledgeable Tutor

She worked along with my child on how to tackle reading/comprehension of (long) passages. After the lesson, she gave a very detailed assessment where improvements are needed and how these areas will be addressed in following lessons. Feedback was very helpful in forming a study/preparation plan for the test.

Tutoring, suggestions, and revisions were on target, professionally!

What did Marainne teach you? Marianne taught me how to reslove, reconsider, and reidentify the problem if you hit a wall in your research. What are the things you like about Marianne? Things I like about Marianne are her teaching, our discussions, and great advices. The information she provides are helpful; for an example I needed more citations for problem/purpose statement and research question. She gave me diresctions and instructed me on where to look for the peer reviews. What has Marianne's tutoring helped you accomplished? Marianne has reset my writing skills, thinking process, and mostly we accomplished our proposal paper without any problems. She knows exactly what my dissertation is about, and we are learning fromeach others. Thank you! Stella Foster

Best tutor!!!

I would recommend Marianne wholeheartedly to anyone looking to improve their writing, reading, and SAT. Marianne has been an excellent tutor for my daughter for the last two years now. She absolutely cares about her students and adjusts her teaching style for each student’s need. She has this natural talent to make writing seem easy, encouraging my daughter to think critically about her views and suggest options to improve her writing. Thanks to Marrianne, my daughter no longer fears writing! We are so thankful that we found her on this platform. Hire her, and you will not regret it!!!

Class Act Tutor

Marianne is truly a class act, and I have had a wonderful experience with her. I am a transfer student from a community college applying to prestigious colleges this year, so I was having a hard time finding an editor that understands the expectations and requirements for transfer students. Marianne is incredibly knowledgable about not just college admissions, but also what is needed to write amazing college essays. I worked with Marianne to brainstorm and compose all of my college essays, and Marianne assisted and mentored me so that my essays were not only amazing and interesting for the admissions reader, but also pieces of writing that I was genuinely proud of. Marianne is quite direct, but she is also receptive and understanding of the student’s needs, and does a great job of molding her teaching molds to the student. As of writing this review, I haven’t heard back yet from the colleges I have applied too, but I have high hopes about the decisions thanks to Marianne’s help, and I will also provide a follow-up to this review when I hear back from the colleges :).

Marianne is a Super Star

To Marianne and Wyzant: I am writing this letter to anyone who is thinking of hiring an editor. I highly recommend Marianne; she has worked with me to get a large body of writing on my PhD dissertation done. She worked tirelessly and patiently with me for several months, and she always stayed ahead of me, never making me wait for her feedback. In fact, her diligence with spurred me on to excel and to write even more. The way she made my ill-written foolishness actually look good, and her mastery of grammar and punctuation is refreshing in a day when good writing practices are lacking. I can not say enough about how much Marianne has helped me. Together, we went through well over 150 pages and her masterful editor’s touch was gentle and did not disturb my voice in the body of work. What she did was help my voice make sense. Again, I must say, Marianne is a top academic editor, and I am considering using her again for another academic writing project.

Exceptional Tutor and Editor

Marianne's expertise is in helping you to make your writing succinct, persuasive, and thoughtful. She is truly a master in the art of writing and not only edits, but thinks critically about your message and provides suggestions that hone your argument. Your writing will certainly improve, but even more so, Marianne will ensure that your message is persuasive and communicated effectively. She is that good. I don't want to imagine where I would be on my writing journey if I had not worked with Marianne, and I really think that you should, too. :)

Great Tutor/Editor! Definitely recommend!

Marianne is an amazing tutor who has helped me prepare for the SAT and for class essays. I have been working with her for a long time and it is evident that she strives to improve not only her students' writing but their approach to writing. As for the SAT, she provides me with tips that make the SAT reading and writing section much less intimidating and even creates personalized lessons to improve my weaknesses. She is an expert writer and the best tutor I have had. Thank you so much Marianne!
