About Ambarish

Bio

I primarily tutor middle school and high school math (through calculus) and physics. I'm also happy to work with interested students on computer science or competition math.

I graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a bachelor's in Computer Science and a minor in Math. While at CMU, I worked as a peer tutor (1 on 1) and also as a teaching assistant for larger groups. I received positive feedback and learned a lot about working with students through those experiences.

I'm familiar with math standardized testing - received a perfect score on AP Calc AB / BC, AP Physics 1, AP Physics C, AP Chemistry, AP Stats, ACT math/science section, and SAT math / physics subject tests (since discontinued). I've also helped students with ACT math prep in the past.

In my sessions, I usually start by looking at problems with students to get a sense of where they're unsure or having trouble. (For larger tests like the ACT, I'll give the student a diagnostic test either ahead of time or together, so we can look it over and pinpoint where to focus.)

From there, we go over any concepts as needed and then work through problems together. If I'm sent the material ahead of time, I'll write my own practice questions. We can then alternate between working through extra problems together and the student trying their homework problems on their own — so they leave confident they can solve their assigned homework independently.

For students preparing for larger tests (or any student who'd like one), I'm also happy to put together a study plan based on their goals and timeline.

I'm available via email and strive to respond quickly to follow-up questions.

Math and science have been a useful foundation in my own life, and I want to make that possible for students too. I place a strong emphasis on helping students become self-confident in their ability to problem solve. Ultimately, I want students to feel confident that they can pick up the math and science they need to achieve what they want to do in life.

Approved Subjects

C++

C++

I used C++ professionally for several years, where I wrote and maintained production code as part of my work as a software engineer. My experience covers core language features including pointers and references, memory management, classes and inheritance, templates, and the standard library. I earned my Computer Science degree from Carnegie Mellon, where C++ was used in algorithm coursework. I'm comfortable helping students at the high school and introductory college level with C++ syntax, debugging, object-oriented programming concepts, and common assignments.
Computer Science

Computer Science

I worked as a teaching assistant at Carnegie Mellon for the introductory data structures course, where I led recitations and helped students one-on-one with assignments. Following graduation, I worked as a software engineer, practically applying the computer science fundamentals I learned in school. I'm comfortable across most areas of computing, from theoretical foundations like algorithms and data structures to lower-level systems topics and applied areas like graphics.
Data Structures

Data Structures

I served as a teaching assistant for the introductory data structures course at Carnegie Mellon, where I led recitations and helped students implement and reason about arrays, linked lists, trees, hash tables, heaps, and graphs. Beyond the introductory course, I took several upper-level algorithms courses at CMU that built on these foundations. I have applied this material in technical interviews, having passed coding interviews that test data structure manipulation and algorithmic problem solving. I am comfortable helping students with both the conceptual side (when to use which structure and why) and the implementation side (writing correct code).
