I have experience at the junior high, high school, and junior college levels. I have been teaching in the Illinois public school system for 31 years. I have taught English, Literature, and Social Studies at the junior high (8th grade) level and currently teach the Honors English program to high school juniors and seniors. I am also the chairperson of the English department. I also taught English Comp I and II at our local junior college several years ago.
I believe in teaching the student, the individual. I am not a strong supporter of standardized testing because very little about teaching is standardized. Even if the material is the same, teachers don't all teach the same and students don't all learn the same. I know there are certain disciplines in education where the teachers deal in black and white. There are only right or wrong answers. I believe the Humanities disciplines take into account the "human factor" more than other disciplines and, therefore, operate and "live" in the gray areas.
