Behind? Lost? Discouraged? Scared of math? Doug O. can help! Many students like you have come my way in the past and have gone on to do very well in their classes. With over ten years of experience in tutoring and teaching math (one on one and small group) I absolutely love helping students gain the skills and confidence needed to succeed. Behind? Lost? Discouraged? Scared of math? Doug O. can help! Many students like you have come my way in the past and have gone on to do very well in their classes. With over ten years of experience in tutoring and teaching math (one on one and small group) I absolutely love helping students gain the skills and confidence needed to succeed. There is very little more satisfying than seeing people live up to their potential and discover that they aren’t so bad at math after all!
My goal in working with a student is to first see where they are and then slowly but surely build up their confidence to get them where they need to be. Learning math is like climbing a ladder. The tutor first needs to find out what rung the student is on and then help them go up—rung by rung. If you start on too low of a rung the student will be bored. Start on too high of a rung and the student will be lost. It can be easy to lose a student on the way up the ladder but small checks for understanding help me to know if we are on the right track. Many are afraid of math but I am convinced that most are better at it than they know! Students all have different learning styles and learning speeds but I enjoy figuring out what works best for them.
My tutoring experience is mainly with all levels of high school math, though I have helped college/university students and adults as well. My experience includes 10+ years of tutoring math (basic arithmetic through calculus) at a local tutoring center, two years of teaching at a home school (7th and 8th grade), teaching math at both public and private schools, and teaching English and teaching methods overseas in Asia. Subjects tutored and taught include algebra I and II, geometry, precalculus, calculus, statistics, and ACT test prep. In addition to earning a Bachelor of Science degree in math from the University of Illinois (2000), I have also taken graduate level classes (both math and education) at Northern Illinois University and Judson University (2010-2011).
