Hello. I'm a friendly, dynamic tutor with experience teaching students from middle school age to adults returning to school. I have three years of experience teaching high school English and five years of experience teaching college composition. Currently I am teaching a college speech class and test prep classes on the weekends. I really enjoy working one-on-one with students because it allows me to "see the wheels turning" as they learn to understand what they are reading or express their ideas in writing. I can be a proofreader, but I'd rather help students through the entire process of writing an essay so they develop skills to eventually be independent writers.

My other academic strength is math; I taught a basic algebra (college) class for six years and tutored many students along the way. It is so rewarding to hear students tell me that I presented a math concept in a way they could finally understand. And, of course, my uncommon combination of verbal and math skills makes me an ideal tutor for the SAT, ACT and admission tests like the TEAS.

It's important to me that my students build confidence as well as skills, so whether you are struggling with English, math, or a big test, please know that I have a non-intimidating approach, a good sense of humor, and a lot of patience.

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

I have an MA in English. I taught high school English classes for three years and have been teaching college composition for six years. I've also tutored students preparing for multi-subject standardized tests (ACT, TEAS, COMPASS).
ACT Math

ACT Math

Although I am what you would call "an English person," I have always been good at solving math problems. My strength as a tutor in this subject is that I am good at explaining math concepts from a non-math-person perspective and I am very patient. I spent six years teaching math (and English) prerequisite courses at a private nursing college in addition to tutoring students in all subjects for admissions tests.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

I have an MA in English. I taught high school English classes for three years and have been teaching college composition for six years. I've also tutored students preparing for multi-subject standardized tests (ACT, TEAS, COMPASS).
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Although I am what you might call "an English person," I have always been good at math as well. This is probably because I tend to think in a logical and orderly way and I am a determined and creative problem solver. I first tutored math as I helped students prepare for standardized tests. I've spent the last six years teaching math (and English) prerequisite courses at a small private nursing college. I still tutor there and lead workshops for the school's placement and admission tests.
English

English

I earned a Master's degree in Literature and Rhetoric with a perfect 4.0 and achieved secondary teacher certification in English. I taught high school English classes at all four grades and both regular and honors levels. I have been teaching college composition, which includes a reading and literary analysis component, for six years. I continue to write and read as hobbies.
Grammar

Grammar

With my BA and MA in English, I've had a lot of writing experience. I evaluate students' grammar as I grade their essays, but I prefer to teach the grammar concept and let students identify and correct their own errors. I believe that sentence structure, grammar and punctuation are best taught in context as strategic rhetorical choices rather than in a long list of restrictive rules and exceptions.
Literature

Literature

I earned a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in Literature and Rhetoric. I also achieved secondary teacher certification in English. I taught high school English classes for three years and have been teaching college composition, which includes a reading and literary analysis component, for six years. I am particularly interested in poetry, American literature, and the relationship of film and literature.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I first tutored math in graduate school as I helped education majors prepare for state exams. A few years later, I was a math and algebra (and language arts) tutor at Sylvan Learning Center. Since then, I've spent the last six years teaching math (and English) prerequisite courses at a small private nursing college. I still tutor there and lead multi-subject workshops for the school's placement and admission tests, which have a pre-algebra focus.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I earned a Master's degree in Literature and Rhetoric with a perfect 4.0 and achieved secondary teacher certification in English. My bachelor's degree is also in English. I have been teaching college composition for more than six years. As the only English teacher at a small private school, I was frequently asked to help proofread and rephrase webpages, business communication, and peers' papers. When reviewing student assignments, I consistently and thoroughly indicate any problems in content, organization and style, but my marks become more general over the course of the term to help students become reliable, independent reviewers of their own work.
PSAT

PSAT

This is my second year teaching a PSAT prep class for middle school students. We learn and practice the same skills tested on the SAT, but at a slightly lower level so younger students can see improvement and achieve mastery. Vocabulary development and math test-taking strategy are both major components at this level.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

My undergraduate minor was speech communication and I earned secondary teacher certification in speech and English. I have taught semester-long courses in speech/public speaking: one at the high school level and eight at the college level. I am in my third year of teaching a year-long course in public speaking for middle school students on Saturdays.
Reading

Reading

In addition to my BA and MA in English, I completed several sessions of teacher training in how to teach reading strategies at the high school level. I have applied these tools and techniques when teaching English classes and when I tutored a few (non-ESL) students in reading comprehension skills.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

I've been tutoring students for the SAT and PSAT for about 5 years now since Illinois adopted the test as a requirement. I can help the questions and passages to make more sense to struggling students and identify the little differences that can earn high-achieving students a few more points.
TEAS

TEAS

My last place of employment used the TEAS as the admission test for the degree program. As the English and math teacher there, I led test prep workshops about six times a year for over four years. I am very familiar with the content of each subject area and the format of the test.
Writing

Writing

I have been teaching college composition (English 101 and 102) for more than six years, including time spent as a graduate teaching assistant while earning a Master's degree in Literature and Rhetoric. My bachelor's degree is also in English with an emphasis in writing. I continue to write as a hobby and have a particular interest in writing reviews, essays, poetry and song lyrics. Personally, I believe that the process of learning to write well can not help but improve one's critical thinking and analytical skills, useful tools for any educational pursuit or career. That is why I am so passionate about teaching writing: it develops the overall student and person.

Knows how to connect with students

My daughter does not like standardized tests, so we were looking for positive reinforcement and ways to reduce anxiety and stress. Angela was able to connect quickly with our daughter and is providing strategies for her to be successful. I would recommend Angela any day. She is fantastic.

SAT

Kaylie does well academically in school. However, when she did first try on SAT in November 2019, her SAT score doesn't match her grade level at high school. Kaylie may lack of test skills and ability to apply what she has learned to standard tests. Angela met with her and talked about strategies for the math portion of the test as well as how to do reading session.
