Hi I'm Kavinda, physics PhD, and I want to help you learn the core principles of physics and mathematics! I recently graduated from Emory University's doctorate program, and I want to share the expertise and knowledge I have gained with the next generation. I spent a year and a half as a physics TA in graduate school, where I oversaw physics laboratory experiments and exams. For the TA position, we had to learn teaching philosophy and what current research on physics education was like. Using that information, I was able to obtain numerous high evaluations from the students. I was also a volunteer tutor for another year and a half in HS, teaching my peers AP Calculus and AP Physics. I also spent some time helping teach a once a month science club at Laurel Ridge Elementary school. Engaging with the young students and watching their scientific interests ignite was amazing. This is a feeling I want all my students to achieve! I want my students to not only understand the details of physics and math, but also the problem solving strategies that will make them more successful in whatever their future career might be.
Apart from tutoring, I also had the opportunity to mentor three undergraduate students in our research group. This opportunity allowed me to sharpen my one-on-one skills with students. Understanding the individual student's learning process helped me better facilitate their research progress. All three of my mentees got into their desired graduate schools. I believe my experience demonstrates my readiness to teach and my desire to help students grow. Since I have limited formal training in teaching pedagogy, I am open to comments and suggestions from students and parents on the structure of the lesson and any external resources the student might need for their success. I am available to meet online and in person (preferably at a library). Please don't hesitate to ask any questions!
