About Elijah

Bio

I am a recent graduate from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. I majored in biology and minored in chemistry. I graduated Summa Cum Laude and as a Bronze Tablet Scholar. During college I was a part of a club called X-Time, where we developed and taught STEM curriculum to elementary/middle schoolers. I also have two younger siblings, have tutored friends, and have worked as a camp counselor (middle school age) for the past two summers.

I usually like to have my students "discover" where they went wrong, as opposed to me just telling them the correct answer. For instance, when I used to help friends in chemistry I would ask them how they did the problem and to explain their thought process. This helps me identify where the misconception is, as well as doesn't give them the correct answer. I then explain why their line of reasoning is wrong and ask them if they have an alternative solution. If they do and it's correct they quickly learn the correct way, as they know the material and were just unsure. However, if they cannot come up with the correct solution I like to give them hints to guide them to the right answer. If they still can't get it I explain the correct solution. No matter how quickly they get the answer I always like to do a couple more questions to see if they can get it without any assistance.

Much of my academic tutoring experience comes from 1:1 with friends and family. However, camp would range from 1:1 to a group setting: we would sometimes do educational activities in which case I taught the group and then helped those struggling. X-Time was a group setting as a volunteer: we would do a science experiment for the group and then explain what was happening.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

My degree in Biology required an intermediate level of math for statistical analysis and coursework up to Calculus 2. Additionally, I have taken AP Stats, Calc BC, Pre-Calc, etc, through highschool. This level of math requires more critical thinking than memorized solutions, which I am prepared to teach.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

As a part of my degree I have taken several upper level math and statistics courses, as well as completed PreCalc, Algebra, Calculus, etc in highschool. At this level of math skills required mostly revolve around critical thinking, rather than memorized solutions and tricks, which I feel prepared to teach.
Anatomy

Anatomy

Although my specialty is Organismal Biology, I felt greater knowledge would help me push research in my field forward. I took many extra classes including: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and organic chemistry. These classes are all relevant to anatomy and physiology. Additionally, I spent a lot of time in the lab portion of anatomy and excelled to the point that my TA asked if I'd like to join the professors lab.
Biochemistry

Biochemistry

Although my passion is organismal biology, I felt it was important to have a wide breadth of knowledge. I took many extra courses that were more relevant to a Pre-Med track including: Organic Chem 1&2, Biochemistry, Physiology, and Genetics, all of which help supplement my knowledge in biochemistry.
Biology

Biology

I completed my Bachelor's degree at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Although my specialty is wildlife biology, that is my passion, I sought out many classes, and have completed biochemistry, anatomy, and organic chemistry. I graduated with a 4.0.
Chemistry

Chemistry

The foundation of Biology is Chemistry, to strengthen my understanding of my major I took organic chem, biochem, inorganic chem, and completed a chemistry minor. I completed a lab portion for most of these courses and worked in a lab through college.
Ecology

Ecology

I graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I chose my program specifically because it combined both Pre-Med and cell biology with wildlife biology and ecology. I have taken undergraduate and graduate level classes in ecology including: marine biology, behavioral ecology, ecology, and more. I have also completed several independent projects and worked in a lab during college.
Physiology

Physiology

While I specialize in Organismal biology as my passion, to push research forward I felt it necessary to have a wide breadth of knowledge. I took extra classes in college including: physiology, anatomy, ecology, biochemistry, and organic chemistry, all of which feed into physiology. I graduated with a 4.0.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

As a part of my degree I have taken several upper level math courses, as well as have completed Honors PreCalc, Algebra, AP Calc BC, AP Statistics, etc in highschool and middleschool. At this level of math, solutions usually fall under critical thinking, as opposed to memorized tactics/solutions (save for things like PEMDAS), both of which I am confident I can teach or give key tips.
