Three generations of women taught me every sewing skill that they knew, and I have been sewing since early childhood. After graduating college I was a professional costumer for five years. I learned to draft patterns, and how to work with different fabrics to achieve the desired effects. If I could see a picture of the garment, I could make it. Since I was working at a college, I had the opportunity to teach students how to sew. These students had little to no experience. After that, I sold sewing machines and fabric for both So-Fro and Joann's. Fast forward 27 years, I am back working part time at Joann's and discovered that the most asked question is "where can I learn to sew" So, I decided to offer sewing lessons. My approach is very practical, teaching to whatever level necessary. I take the stress, pressure and fear away from learning to sew.

My cooking experience followed the same path. At age 9, I worked for my mother as she worked in professional kitchens. Since then, I have cooked for groups as large as 150, or as small as 1. I can teach you how to make beautiful, practical meals for your family or for someone that can no longer cook but loves homemade meals. All fresh, healthy and flavorful.

I have been cooking since a child. My mother was a professional cook, I learned to be her prep cook early on. During the winter, I monthly prepare a for a social service group, consisting of 20 to 100 people. I have also catered graduation, engagement parties and have prepared meals for homebound. I believe that the trick to preparing healthy, fresh meals for any size audience is planning, this is what I teach to everyone that works with me. The art of preparing meals that appear to be very complicated can really be easy to prepare.

I have been sewing since I was a child, taught by three generations of women in my family. After college, I was a professional costumer that trained college students to meet their practicum requirements, adjusting my teaching styles to work with students of multiple skill levels. For three years I sold sewing machines, providing machine lessons, again to multiple skill level students. One of my personal achievements was to teach a vision impaired person to use their sewing machine. I pride myself on being able to teach students regardless of age and skills.

Very knowledgable and patient

Mary is great! She explains things very well and is very patient. She made sure she addressed my questions until i fully understand the answer, having me go through some sewing exercises to help me understand better.

Knowledgeable and patient instructor.

I was struggling with threading and she taught me patiently how to thread the needle and bobbin and how to change the settings on my sewing machine. She provided a practice fabric, notebook, and pen and I hope to take a lesson with her again in the future. As an added bonus, it was convenient to me to bring my daughter, and she played with Mary's dog while we sewed.

12/29/2014 My daughter received a sewing machine for Christmas. We told her that we would get her a few lessons as part of her gift. Mary met with our eleven year old. Mary was very kind, knowledgeable, patient, and kept my daughter's interest for her two hour lesson. She showed her how to use all of the features on her sewing machine, had her practice different stitches, and much more. My daughter is so excited to get started working on some projects. Mary's lessons were hands on and involved my daughter every step of the way. Mary even gave her homework to do before her next lesson. She will not disappoint. 1/5/2015 Mary helped my daughter complete her very first project using her new sewing machine. She made a purse and it came out great!

I am having a wonderful experience with Mary. I have always wanted sewing lessons, but was worried that it would be too hard to understand. With all of Mary's knowledge and experience things couldn't be going better. As a beginner, I don't know the terms used, and Mary helps make it easy to learn and a lot of fun. She customizes the lesson plans to the specific things that each student wants to learn. She really takes the time to make sure all your questions are answered and everything is understandable.
