About Ilya

My name is Ilya and I am on WyzAnt offering tutoring in Russian, Hebrew and Arabic, as well as world history to people here in the Chicagoland area. I enjoy learning and working with other students, so I look forward to tutoring you whether you're in high school, college or grad school.

I'm a graduate of Lake Forest College with a B.A. in international relations and I've studied at the University of Chicago, in the Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations (NELC) department. Recently, I worked as an English-Arabic translator for a website. I'm a native speaker of Russian (fluent) and have studied Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic for three years+, as well as Comparative Semitic linguistics. I am able to teach students at the beginner or intermediate levels and help them with reading, writing, speaking skills or preparing for written exams (including placement tests).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I've tutored American history in the past to high school and college students.

Arabic

I've studied Arabic for two years at the university and completed the third year-level High Intermediate Modern Standard Arabic this year. I also can work with students interested in learning Colloquial Syrian Arabic (Damascus dialect). I've recently completed an Arabic certificate from the University of Chicago Graham School.

Hebrew

I've studied Hebrew for these past four years -- two on my own and two at the university. In addition, I've travelled to Israel several times. I can tutor Modern (Israeli) Hebrew as well as Biblical Hebrew. I'm also familiar with Mishnaic, Medieval, Rashi, etc.

Russian

I'm a native speaker of Russian and have taken it all four years of high school.

World History

I've tutored World history in the past to high school and college students.
