I'm currently an editor for a company that publishes Latin and Greek pedagogical texts; however, I love working with students and continue to offer tutoring in Latin and classical Greek to people of all ages!

I received my MAT in Latin and Classical Humanities from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and my BA in Classical Civilizations from the University of Michigan. My experience includes eight years as a classical languages, writing, and literature tutor, teaching students ranging from middle schoolers to doctoral candidates. Further, I have taught Latin at St. Norbert School in the Chicago area, in addition to serving as a beginning and intermediate Latin instructor at UMass during my masters program. While I love helping students with any language-related subject (in fact, I truly enjoy analyzing English grammar!), I am most passionate about teaching Latin. I find it extremely gratifying when my students realize that a so-called "dead" language can actually be relevant to their lives! When tutoring Latin, I like to focus on using various strategies to help students "read with expectations, " meaning that students engage in linear reading (reading left-to-right, without skipping around), and approach texts with a notion of what makes a sentence complete. More generally, as a tutor, I am very patient and flexible, always keeping a student's goals and motivations in mind when planning and teaching lessons.

---------------------

In addition to tutoring Latin and Greek, I also help students brainstorm, edit, and proofread essays and term papers. I am well-versed in MLA, APA, and Chicago style and citation conventions.

Classics

Classics

I graduated from the University of Michigan with highest distinction and a degree in Classical Civilizations. After teaching Latin and mythology at a junior high for three years, I have returned to graduate school to pursue further studies in Classics and education.
Greek

Greek

As a part of my undergraduate program in Classical Civilizations at the University of Michigan, I engaged in thorough study of ancient Greek prose and poetry. Since first learning the language, I have tutored ancient Greek for 7 years and have taken additional graduate coursework in the subject while pursuing an MAT in Classical Humanities.
Latin

Latin

After graduating from the University of Michigan with a degree in Classical Civilizations, I taught Latin to junior high students for three years, while also tutoring students of all ages. I am now pursuing an MAT in Latin and Classical Humanities at Umass-Amherst, a degree with a focus on Latin pedagogy. While taking coursework toward my MAT, I am also an instructor at the university for beginning and intermediate Latin classes.
Proofreading

Proofreading

In addition to tutoring students in writing and editing one-on-one, I have worked for 3 years for a company that offers editing and proofreading services online. I love language (I find a well-turned phrase irresistible!), and I thoroughly enjoy helping others improve their writing.

Patient and Excellent Teacher

My daughter has a learning disability and this course is required for her. Amelia is able to strip the lesson down to the key points, directly teach those, and then add the extras after the key points are understood.

Knowledgeable and good at communications and familiar with AP curriculum

Amelia and I reviewed Latin grammar and vocabulary for my upcoming test and translated a Caesar text and helped my understanding of Caesar and history and translation. Very helpful and knowledgeable.

Fabulous Latin Tutor

Amelia W. has been the perfect Latin for tutor. She provides feedback on what you're doing both correctly and incorrectly. She offers tips and mnemonics for helping to remember some of the more tedious rules in Latin. She has helped me tremendously. I have been teaching myself elementary Latin so I can test out of it at my university and go straight to intermediate Latin, which saves me both time and money. I would not be where I am in Latin if not for Amelia's help! You can't go wrong in having her as your tutor.

Great teacher!

My daughter was having issues with Latin but didn’t tell me until two days before her midterm. I am so glad I found Amelia to help. She was absolutely perfect, had a great way of relating to my daughter, and definitely knew her stuff! She followed up with appropriate materials and after the first session she already felt more at ease. She taught her the foundational concepts that she had been missing in a very easy to follow way. I highly recommend her. So glad we found her.

Latin

She appreciates your help and is doing well thanks to your extra help! Her grade is terrific. As subject gets more challenging she should continue tutor sessions

Delightfully fastidious and engaging

Amelia took our 16 year old from an uphill battle to level ground. She has thorough preparation, connects quickly, and shapes the session with steady content. Her enjoyment of her subject area takes her teaching to a higher level. My son has never been able to get through language assignments as independently as he has with Amelia's organizational suggestions.

Very knowledgeable & helpful latin tutor

Amelia is an excellent latin tutor and I highly recommend her due to her in-depth latin knowledge as well as her ability to teach and explain concepts to students. It's one thing to know the subject but another to be able to teach, she has proven herself in both of these areas. Thank you Amelia for all of your help thus far. She has been tutoring an early high school age student who has said how well she explains concepts and how helpful her assignment review has been.

Patient and Helpful!!

Amelia was very good and patient with me. I am not good in Latin and it takes me along time to catch on. She was able to help me with my paper. She is really good one on one.

Kind and patient tutor!

Amelia has a great way of connecting with my 7th grade daughter. She organizes the material in such a way that it is easier to understand. We are so happy with our daughter's improvement.

A gem --- We were lucky to find Amelia

Amelia is using her teaching experience and skills to support my daughter in her beginning Honors Latin class. My daughter has not had formal grammar instruction at all so Amelia is working with her on that as it applies to her Latin comprehension and development. They have had 4 sessions and are making great progress is their relationship and my daughter's successful development in the subject of Latin.
